Welcome to the First-Year Experience (FYE) Program!

The First-Year Experience (FYE) program at NEIU is dedicated to providing you with the skills, tools and knowledge to support your transition into college. We know from research and experience that building a strong foundation in your first year is key to your future success.

The FYE program is designed to help you transition into the intellectual, cultural and social community of NEIU. We do this through FYE classes, Peer Mentor support, and co-curricular opportunities.

F. I. R. S. T.                                      Our main areas of focus are:

Future planning                                                             1. Identity Development

Inquiry                                                                           2. Academic Planning

FAQ

What is an FYE class?

FYE courses are classes for first-year students that are a blend of college readiness content and general education class content. Each FYE class is supported by an assigned FYE Peer Mentor. The professor and peer mentor work closely to help you succeed.

Who takes FYE courses?

All students who enter the University with fewer than 30-credit hours (all first-time freshmen) are encouraged to take an FYE course.

How do FYE classes help me?

All FYE courses provide credit toward your general education requirements and help support your transition to NEIU. Read more about general education requirements.

How do I register for an FYE course?

Your advisor will help you pick an FYE class at orientation. First-year students must meet with their advisor to register for classes. If you are unable to attend any of the orientation sessions and would still like to register for classes, please call the Advising Center at (773) 442-5470. Students admitted to Project Success, Proyecto Pa’Lante or Wentworth Scholars, contact your advisor within the appropriate program or contact the program office if you’re not sure who your advisor is.

How do I prepare for college success?

Visit PrepStep for College. This site is available through NEIU's Ronald Williams Library. PrepStep is a test preparation database that provides students with access to build your skills in essential subject areas like college success, reading and writing, math, career preparation, and much more.
