2023 CHEC Fellows program

The ChicagoCHEC Research Fellows program is a comprehensive learning experience about health disparities in cancer for undergraduate and post-baccalaureate students at Northeastern Illinois University, the University of Illinois at Chicago, Northwestern University, the City Colleges of Chicago, and other community and junior colleges in the Chicago metropolitan area who are planning to apply to graduate or medical school. This program is focused on the development of academic, technical, and professional skills in preparation for careers in social, behavioral, and biomedical research and in healthcare.
ChicagoCHEC Research Fellows will spend the summer in seminars and research rotations learning from leading researchers. A stipend is given for the entirety of the eight-week program.
Fellowship Application Timeline
- Dec. 20, 2022: Early application deadline
- Feb. 3, 2023: Early applicant selection and notification
- Feb. 6, 2023: Application deadline
- February/March 2023: Interviews of finalists
- March 2023: Selection and notification
- June 12, 2023: Start of summer program
- Aug. 4, 2023: End of summer program

Students from any major who are passionate about health disparities in cancer are encouraged to apply.

Women in Science Conference: Public Health
March 30-31, 2023
The in-person day will have multiple speakers and activities and take place from 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 30 in Alumni Hall and the Golden Eagles Room in the Student Union building on Northeastern Illinois University's Main Campus at 5500 N. St. Louis Avenue. Complimentary parking will be available on the fourth floor of the Parking Facility.
The second day of the conference, Friday, March 31, will be conducted via Zoom from 10:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.

Cancer Health and Mental Wellness: YOU, Family, Community
Sept. 22-23, 2022
The Chicago Cancer Health Equity Collaborative (CHEC) invited members of the Chicago area community to participate in its 7th Annual Community Forum from 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday, Sept. 22-23. The forum was offered in person at NEIU's El Centro location at 3390 N. Avondale Ave. in Chicago, and virtually via Zoom. View the flyer.
This year’s theme was Cancer Health and Mental Wellness: YOU, Family, Community.
There were various presentations on both days and information was provided in English, Spanish, Cantonese, and American Sign Language.

MOLA Conference: Paving New Pathways/Abriendo Caminos:
Transforming LatinX Health through Technology and Innovative Healthcare

ChicagoCHEC and the NEIU Center of Health have partnered with the Medical Organization for Latino Advancement (MOLA) and hosted their annual conference in person at NEIU on Friday, Oct. 7, and Saturday, Oct. 8, 2022. View the flyer.
The title of this year's conference was Paving New Pathways/Abriendo Caminos: Transforming LatinX Health through Technology and Innovative Healthcare.
Some of the specific themes of the conference were LatinX public health and infectious disease, gender, sexual and LGBTQ identities, cancer and chronic disease, and structural barriers for LatinX and minoritized populations.
