Dear Northeastern Illinois University alumni and friends:
I wish you good health and safety during this unprecedented and uncertain time. As Golden Eagle alumni and friends, you are valued members of our University community. I know that you care deeply about Northeastern Illinois University, and for this reason, I want to keep you informed on what actions we are taking. Please know, too, that I appreciate your concern, inquiries and support.
On Friday, March 20, Governor J.B. Pritzker issued a stay-at-home Executive Order for the entire State of Illinois, effective 5 p.m. on Saturday, March 21, 2020, through at least Tuesday, April 7, in order to curb the spread of the COVID-19 virus.
Prior to this, we had been closely monitoring public health recommendations and taking appropriate actions. For that reason, we called for remote instruction for all students through the remainder of the spring semester and we put into place a plan for all but the most essential employees to work remotely. Last week, we announced that the May Commencement has been postponed. The Commencement announcement, in particular, was a difficult decision. I am keenly aware of how important this event is to our graduates and their families and friends. We will do everything in our power to celebrate our spring graduates. A time and place to honor their hard work and achievements will be forthcoming.
It will come as no surprise to you that the Golden Eagle spirit of innovation, resilience and determination is going strong. I am truly inspired to see how our community is coming together. Even though we are physically separated—through geography or through all-important social distancing practices—we are working together to combat a global challenge.
You, our alumni and friends—whether you’re here in Illinois or elsewhere in our nation and world—are such an important part of our family. Please know that I am grateful for you, and I am confident that as a community, we will rise above this.
From the bottom of my heart, thank you for your ongoing support. We will stay in touch and we all look forward to welcoming you back home to Northeastern Illinois University in the future. Until then, I wish you strength and good health as we unite together to combat this challenge to our global community.
Gloria J. Gibson, Ph.D.
