Writing Intensive Program (WIP)

The Writing Intensive Program (WIP) provides support to both faculty and students at NEIU. WIP and the WIP graduation requirement were developed by a faculty task force in 2007.

WIP is comprised of undergraduate courses across the curriculum that fulfill NEIU’s Writing Intensive graduation requirement. Undergraduate students must successfully complete a WIP course of at least three credit hours within their discipline in order to graduate. Students should speak with their advisor to learn which course(s) will fulfill the WIP graduation requirement for their major.

WIP courses are content courses that are designed to help students master the course content through writing, learn about writing in their chosen discipline, and improve their academic writing skills. Courses are officially designated as WIP when approved by faculty governance as meeting the Writing Intensive Course Guidelines.

Student Support

The Academic Support Center (ASC) provides peer-led tutoring support for students enrolled in WIP courses. Students are encouraged to contact ASC to schedule appointments. 

Faculty Support

The Academic Support Center (ASC) provides support to faculty teaching and designing WIP courses. Support can include assistance in redesigning or updating WIP syllabi to conform to the Writing Intensive Course Guidelines, strategies for designing formal and informal writing assignments, and strategies for responding to student writing.
