An Evening with Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor

Northeastern Illinois University alumna Dr. Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor is one of the nation’s most prominent scholars on Black liberation politics, social movements and racial inequality. Her book, “Race for Profit: How Banks and the Real Estate Industry Undermined Black Homeownership,” was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in History in 2020. In 2021, she was awarded MacArthur and Guggenheim Fellowships. Taylor is currently the Leon Forrest Professor of African American Studies at Northwestern University.

NEIU Weekend Virtual Scavenger Hunt: September 12-17

We are kicking off NEIU Weekend 2022 with a virtual scavenger hunt! The entire NEIU community is welcome to participate during Spirit Week through Saturday, Sept. 17 for a chance to win a variety of prizes.

To play, download the Scavify app on your mobile device and search for the NEIU 2022 Spirit Week hunt. The highest scoring participant will receive a cash prize! Additional prizes include one-year complimentary Blue & Gold Alumni Association membership and NEIU swag items. New tasks will be added to the hunt daily.


6th Annual homecoming dance

Join the Black Caucus Club (Student Organization) for the 6th Annual Homecoming Dance. The theme for this year is “Black Carpet.” — Ease on down the road to the Black Carpet Event; invite your friends and come have fun with us! This year's Homecoming will be held at the Jacob H. Carruthers Center for Inner City Studies (CCICS) at 700 E Oakwood Blvd.

Golden Eagle 5k run-walk

Campus Recreation is leading the return of the Golden Eagle 5K run. Join alumni, faculty, staff and students for a new course map that takes participants through the University grounds. This event is open to the community.

la copa soccer tournament 

The Angelina Pedroso Center for Diversity and Intercultural Affairs invites students, faculty and staff to register to play at this year's La Copa soccer tournament. La Copa, will be held at the Physical Education Complex soccer fields. 

Teams will be 7 vs. 7, which includes the keeper. We will assign players to teams to evenly distribute age, gender and skill level. The goal for the tournament is to have fun! There will be a total of five teams. Each team will play each other once, thus each team will play a total of four times. The games will last 20 minutes, divided into two 10‐minute halves. If you would like to participate in the tournament, please complete the sign-up form.

Come on out for the annual Poetry and Pancakes breakfast hosted by the English Department. Bring your lit’ry appreciation … and your appetites! The event is free; no sign-up is required.

Poets in attendance will include Diana Bahena, Clay Cofre, Jaritza Delgado, Timothy Garrison, Sylwia Jurkowski, Lara Levitan, and Hana Urban.

Join us for a family-friendly picnic featuring music, food from Corky's, various food vendors, inflatables, face painting, and more on the University Commons. Advance sign-up is preferred; $10 per person; kids under 12 and NEIU students are complimentary.

We are looking for more departments and organizations to host a table at the Golden Eagle Alumni and Family Picnic from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17. Hosts are encouraged but not limited to have a fun activity, promote their organization, recruit, sell and show off how special they are. Sign up to host a table by Monday, Sept. 12.

NEIU Fall Fest

The Northeastern Programming Board (NPB) presents Fall Fest from 4-9:45 p.m. Sept.17 in Lot J.

Fall Fest is a closed event for the NEIU community. NEIU students, staff, faculty and alumni are allowed one guest over the age of 18 and must bring their NEIU ID, state ID, and/or driver's license. No entry will be permitted without sign-up and NEIU students present.

Sign-up closes at 11:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 15.

  • No outside food, beverages or water bottles are permitted.

Check-in

  • Gates open at 4 p.m. and close at 7:30 p.m.
  • NEIU students, faculty, and staff must bring their NEIU ID.
  • Guests must be accompanied by the NEIU member who signed up.
  • Guests must bring their state ID or driver's license.
  • No re-entry allowed.
  • No water bottles are allowed. Free bottles of water will be provided.
  • No outside food or beverages are permitted.
  • Expect long lines. Make sure to eat before you arrive.
  • You may be asked to empty your pockets of all items so that they can be examined.
  • All bags will be searched and must adhere to our bag policy. Only the following bags are allowed:
    • Clear plastic, vinyl or PVC bags (Maximum size: 12"x6"x12")
    • Small clutch bags approximately the size of a hand (Maximum size: 4.5" x 6.5")
  • We reserve the right to refuse entry to anyone.
  • To ensure a safe environment and experience for everyone, all guests are subject to search.

PARKING

Parking fees will be waived for guests attending NEIU Weekend activities on Saturday, Sept. 17, 2022. Please note: Starting at 3 p.m., parking for new vehicles will not be allowed in the five-level Parking Facility and Lot J (the lot adjacent to The Nest student housing building). Cars can exit all day and night, but new cars cannot enter after 3 p.m.

Join us over NEIU Weekend for NEIU Day at Chicago's world-renowned Black Ensemble Theater for a performance of "My Brother Langston."

"My Brother Langston" vibrantly chronicles in musical dramatic form the life and poetry of Langston Hughes and tells the story of how his life and writings were influenced by American politics, history, and the rich culture of the Harlem Renaissance.
