Unless an event is designed to accommodate a particular group of students (i.e. residents of The Nest) all Northeastern students are welcome to join in the fun! The majority of events will take place on the Main Campus.

Welcome to your home away from home! Northeastern students who have applied and been accepted for student housing at The Nest are able to move into their apartments for Fall 2023. Campus Recreation will be grilling from 11 a.m.-2 p.m.

Residents of The Nest can choose to spend the day at Navy Pier or Lincoln Park Zoo. Buses will leave The Nest at 10:00 a.m. and return around 3:00 p.m.

Jazzin’ at the Shedd

Join Student Leadership Development (SLD) at the Shedd Aquarium, 1200 S. DuSable Lake Shore Drive, for Jazzin at the Shedd! Enjoy live jazz, fireworks against Chicago’s magnificent skyline, and of course, some of the cutest aquatic animals in town!

Tickets are $10 and limited to one per student. Tickets will be available for purchase at the SLD table on the University Commons from noon-3:00 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 21 and 2:00-5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 22. There will be bus transportation available from the Main Campus. Information on transit will be provided when tickets are purchased.

Narcan training

Join Student Health Services in LWH 1001 to learn how to safely use Narcan, a medication that can rapidly reverse the effects of an opioid overdose. This event is open to all Northeastern students and employees.

Join the Jacob H. Carruthers Center for Inner City Studies (CCICS), 700 E. Oakwood Blvd., for the Black August Fun Fair. Black August is a time to reflect on the history of the Black freedom struggle, celebrate ancestors and commit to continuing the fight for justice and liberation. Northeastern students, alumni, faculty and staff are all invited to enjoy music, food, fun activities, games and more!

Bus service will be available to and from the Main Campus to and from CCICS.

Room for Light Exhibit (Through Sept. 1)

Erasing The Distance (ETD) is proud to bring the exhibit “Room for Light” to Northeastern Illinois University in Alumni Hall from 8:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. through Sept. 1. This exhibit is free and open to the public.

The "Room for Light" photography exhibit celebrates the triumphs of mental health journeys of six Chicagoans, showing the light that still shines in the dark spaces we may find ourselves in. Their portraits are showcased in 8x8 light boxes to illuminate all of the unique and beautiful ways we can experience the world. When it comes to lifting restrictive biases, ETD believes in the importance of not only honoring, but also celebrating neurodiversity.

Each portrait will be linked to a QR code where audio stories can be heard. All are encouraged to bring a device to scan the QR code and headphones that connect to their personal device to fully experience the exhibit.

Join Student Counseling Services and the Division of Student Affairs in the Golden Eagles Room of the Student Union to learn about TimelyCare, a free mental health resource available to all currently enrolled students. A representative from TimelyCare will be on-site to answer questions. Lunch will be provided (first come, first served).

"Room for light": Talkback with etd's creative team

Meet Erasing The Distance's creative team in Alumni Hall as they discuss how "Room for Light" came to be. Attendees will explore personal bias and have the opportunity to share their own experiences. Pizza and light refreshments will be provided. This event is sponsored by Student Health Services.

Erasing the Distance is a non-profit arts organization based in Chicago that uses the power of performance to disarm stigma, spark dialogue, educate, and promote healing surrounding issues of mental health.

The Student Organizations and Resource Fair will be held on the University Commons.
