The Angelina Pedroso Center for Diversity and Intercultural Affairs celebrates LGBTQ+ History Month through October. LGBTQ+ History Month is celebrated in October in observance of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer history as well as the history of civil rights movements. We invite the whole campus community to participate in our upcoming programs. Below are a few events that we hope you can prioritize:

Pedroso Kickoff Event: LGBTQ+ Trivia Night

To kick off LGBTQ+ History Month, the Pedroso Center invites trivia fans to test their knowledge and join us for an evening of fun at LGBTQ+ Trivia Night. Bring your best LGBTQ+ history and pop culture knowledge for picture rounds, music rounds, plenty of random facts and interesting tidbits. Participants can enjoy showing off what they know or just being the one with a lucky guess.

To celebrate National Coming Out Day, Pride Alliance and Q-spot are hosting a Coming Out panel discussion moderated by Pedroso Center Coordinator Fawn Pochel. Panelists Christopher Merchant (Ph.D.), Emily Garcia (Ph.D.), Hector Uriostegui (CCAS), Fae (undergraduate student) and Jared Scovill (graduate student) will come together to share their experiences of being out and navigating through spaces as an out individual. We invite everyone to join us in listening and learning from our NEIU family.

National Coming Out Day Q-Spot Meet-up: Queer Social Games

National Coming Out Day is an internationally observed human rights day devoted to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer and questioning folks. This day is about providing visibility to LGBTQ+ individuals and awareness of the issues that affect queer communities. The Pedroso Center is holding a dedicated time and brave space for our LGBTQ+ community. Join Q-Spot and Pride Alliance as we celebrate National Coming Out Day with social games and all things Queer.

Lecture: LGBTQ+ History from the 1930s-1960s

International Pronoun Day

Referring to people by the pronouns they determine for themselves is basic to human dignity. Being referred to by the wrong pronouns particularly affects transgender and gender nonconforming people. Together, we can transform society to celebrate people’s multiple, intersecting identities. Stop by the Pedroso Center and pick up your very own pronoun pin.

Spirit Day: NEIU Purple Out

All Day, Thursday, Oct. 20

Wear purple to take a stand against bullying and support LGBTQ+ youth. Stop by the Pedroso Center for light refreshments and group photos.

Brown Bag Lunch Series: Therapy and Service Access for LGBTQ+ Victims of Sexual Harm and Violence

Join the Pedroso Center in conversation with Lauren Miller, MSc, AM, LSW for our Brown Bag Lunch Series kickoff. During this event we will explore the resources and lack thereof for LGBTQ+ victims of sexual harm and violence. Inaugural speaker Lauren Miller is one of two recipients for the Natalie Haimowitz Postgraduate Fellowship Program, with WomenCare Counseling & Training Center, for 2022.
