The first step in seeking financial aid is filling out FAFSA, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid administered by the U.S. Department of Education. After submission of the FAFSA, step two is completion of NEIU institutional scholarship application.
Within a few days of submitting the FAFSA, you will receive your Student Aid Report (SAR). The SAR summarizes all the information you submitted on the FAFSA. On your SAR you will see reference to your EFC or Expected Family Contribution. You do not have to actually contribute that amount; this number is used to determine your eligibility for federal and state assistance.
To figure out your Financial Need and the amount of aid you can receive, we take the Expected Family Contribution from your SAR and subtract it from the Cost of Attendance at Northeastern.
Cost of Attendance - Expected Family Contribution = Net Cost
Based on the Expected Family Contribution calculation from the Student Aid Report, an award offer will be mailed to new students and an award offer will be reflected on NEIUport under Financial Aid Awards for all students.
FALL 2021 Average cost of attendance
- Fall 2021 average tuition cost: $6,306
- Fall 2021 average fees: $986.00
- Average undergraduate financial aid award package: $6,714 (including loans); without loans $4,929
- Need fully met through need-based assistance only: 70%
Estimated Cost of Attendance for the 2021-2022 Award Year
The Financial Aid Office annually prepares estimated costs of attendance budgets, which reflects maximum education-related costs allowed in the calculation of financial need. The cost of attendance reflects minimum full-time costs for nine months (Fall 2021 and Spring 2022) for undergraduate and graduate students. Please note that if you fit certain income parameters, you may receive a reduced budget. In this case, you should contact the Financial Aid Office since budget adjustments can be considered with appropriate documentation.
