Transfer Scholarships

Northeastern offers various scholarships geared specifically for transfer students.

Students are automatically considered for the Provost and Deans Merit Scholarships upon application for admission to Northeastern Illinois University. Completion of an additional application is not necessary.

Awarded to first-time, full-time Fall undergraduate transfer students who meet the following criteria:

  • You are admitted to Northeastern as an incoming full-time freshman, transfer student or veteran
  • You have a family income of less than $75,000
  • You have family assets of less than $75,000
  • You are enrolled in a baccalaureate degree program for 12 credit hours per fall and spring semesters
  • Submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
  • If you are undocumented, submit an Alternative Application for Illinois Financial Aid via the Retention of Illinois Students & Equity (RISE) Act
  • You have a GPA of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale. (For this scholarship, Northeastern will waive the standard minimum 2.5 GPA admission requirement for eligible NEIU For You students.)

Awarded on a first-come, first-served basis to prospective transfer students who apply early for admission and who meet the following criteria:

  • Illinois resident
  • Cumulative transfer GPA of 3.50
  • Earned Associate of Arts or Associate of Science degree (or at least 60 credit hours)
  • Must enroll as a full-time student

Awarded on a first-come, first-served basis to prospective transfer students who apply early for admission and who meet the following criteria:

  • Illinois resident
  • Cumulative transfer GPA of 3.00
  • Earned Associate of Arts or Associate of Science degree (or at least 60 credit hours)
  • Must enroll as a full-time student

Transfer students from IL, with a 3.0+ cumulative college GPA, and an income less than 800% poverty level (e.g. $184,420 for a family of 4 living in Chicago) will automatically receive a $4,500 per year scholarship. No additional application is needed, other than a FAFSA (or RISE Act alternative application for students without a social security number).

To be considered for the Golden Opportunity Scholarship, a prospective student must:

  • submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or State Alternative Application (RISE Act);
  • have not yet received a baccalaureate degree or the equivalent of 135 semester credit hours;
    not be incarcerated;
  • be an Illinois resident who graduated from an Illinois high school;
  • be admitted to Northeastern as an incoming, first-time, full-time freshman or transfer student;
  • be enrolled in at least 12 credit hours per semester;
  • have an annual household income less than eight times the poverty guideline;
  • have a minimum high school or transfer academic GPA of 3.0 and maintain a minimum Northeastern academic GPA of 3.0 for
  • the period of eligibility (four years for freshmen, two years for transfer); and
  • meet Minimum Standards of Academic Progress for the period of eligibility.

Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship

Northeastern has expanded services for military personnel, veterans, and their dependents. These include specialized assistance in admission, federal and state educational benefits, orientation to Northeastern, and the enrollment process.
