How to Apply as a First-Year Student
Get a clear understanding of how to begin the freshman application process.
Review Application Requirements
NEIU is test-optional and doesn’t require standardized test scores for admission. High school students: If you graduate with a 2.5 cumulative high school grade-point average, you are guaranteed admission. Students with GEDs: If you are 18 or older, you are considered for admission upon completing the GED.
Complete Your Application
Once you’re ready to apply, fill out the online NEIU application.
Submit Transcripts
After completing your application, you must arrange for your high school to electronically send or mail your official high school transcript (with your graduation date) to the Admissions Office. If you’re a high school senior and have been admitted, you must provide your official transcript (with graduation date) once it is available.
Enroll in NEIU
You can expect to receive your admissions decision within 10 days of applying. If admitted, you should complete your Intent to Enroll through the application portal. Then you can proceed to set up your NEIUport, take your placement test, meet with an advisor and more.
Complete FAFSA
Once admitted, if you haven’t done so already, you should complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) or Alternative Application for Illinois Financial Aid as early as possible to determine federal and state student aid eligibility. NEIU’s school code is 001693.
International Applicants
If you are applying as an international student, you must meet additional requirements such as English language proficiency. Please review the international admissions page.
