Sigma Delta Pi is the National Honor Society in Spanish. It was established on Nov. 14, 1919. Its key is a miniature representation of the coat of arms of Castile, its colors, red and gold, and its flower, the red carnation. The purposes of the Society are: to honor those who seek and attain excellence in the study of the Spanish language, literature and culture; to honor those who strive to make the Hispanic contributions to modern culture better known to non-Spanish speaking people; to encourage college and university students to acquire a greater interest in and a deeper understanding of Hispanic culture; and to foster friendly relations and mutual respect between the nations of Hispanic speech and those of other languages.
