The primary goal of this 50-minute course is to provide a shared space for awareness building and skills to first generation ethnically diverse (e.g. African American and historically marginalized populations) students who are navigating institutional racism. Historically, students of color tend to be poorly represented within their graduate programs, have fewer faculty mentors conducting research aligned with their values and/or interests, do not have faculty who share their racial/ethnic background, and therefore have higher rates of attrition. Racially/ethnically diverse graduate students who are able to access supportive mentorship (within and outside of their programs) tend to successfully navigate their academic paths. This course is grounded in Indigenous feminism (Ramirez, 2007) and social justice-informed approaches.

Hip-hop is a culture of resistance and celebration born of Blackness and maintained by youthfulness. Hip-hop is a worldwide transnational phenomena heavily intertwined in the daily lives of young people (Black and non-Black), social media and popular culture across multiple spectrums. And as hip-hop culture turns 50 years old this year, there seems to be no end in sight given the high levels of youth engagement, especially Black/African American youth. How might education and youth development practitioners engage with youth, especially in urban context and in particular Black youth, in both professional ways that allow for rich organic interaction with the youth culture they interface with daily?
The Radical L.O.V.E. is a Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) professional development (PD). This is a Learning Science based PD where we build DEI curricula. All curricula are fused together with intersectionality with critical race theory, trauma-informed practice and care, and the hip-hop phenomenon. Each module within the curricula is designed to promote revolutionary consciousness, critical cultural consciousness and critical self identity.
