Students and Researchers on the water
PrevNext
Agua en Comunidades Experimentales (ACE) is a research community of Northeastern Illinois University (NEIU) students and faculty exploring how research on local water issues can be a transformative experience.

Agua en Comunidades Experimentales (ACE) seeks to build students’ confidence and skills and advance them in their academic and future careers. ACE is training a new generation of environmentally-oriented scientists to find new ways to clean up water pollution; learn how water quality affects organisms like algae, invertebrates, and fish; and maintain sustainable aquatic habitats. Our research experiences deal with local ecosystems and problems that we can help solve. We want to have an impact in our own community.

Freshman students at NEIU in Fall 2019 can join the first-ever ACE cohort of about two dozen students. ACE students will work closely with STEM faculty and academic support staff. Through skill-building classroom sessions, hands-on field and laboratory research, and individualized coaching, students will cultivate their talents and hone their ability to create their own pathway to personal success. Each year of the program, students will advance their professional development by tackling increasingly complex challenges.

As a member of the ACE team, you will:

  1. Conduct water-related research at NEIU for pay.
  2. Earn course credits toward your bachelor’s degree, paid by ACE.
  3. Collaborate with faculty in Earth Science, Biology, and Psychology on research at NEIU.
  4. Travel to scientific conferences, expenses paid by ACE.
  5. Work in paid summer research internships.

Benefits

  • Earn credits toward graduation, paid for by ACE.
  • Gain paid scientific research experience.
  • Learn valuable academic skills.
  • Be part of a supportive community with common goals.

Eligibility in 2019

  • First-year student at NEIU.
