Retirement

State University Retirement System (SURS) is the retirement administrator for employees in public higher education in the State of Illinois. When you become eligible, you will make a one-time, irrevocable election among three available retirement benefit plans. Those three are Traditional, Portable, and Retirement Savings Plan. Benefits in retirement depend on your assigned Tier and your plan election. Social Security taxes will not be withheld from your SURS earnings. SURS participants are not eligible for Social Security coverage based on their employment with a SURS-covered employer.

Supplemental Retirement Plans

In addition to the State University Retirement System (SURS), NEIU offers several supplemental retirement plans for those interested in building larger savings for retirement.

What is a 403(b) plan?

A 403(b) plan, also known as a tax-sheltered annuity plan, is a retirement plan for certain employees of public schools, employees of certain Code Section 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations and certain ministers. A 403(b) plan allows employees to contribute some of their salary to the plan for retirement.

What 403(b) plans does NEIU offer?
  • Fidelity: (800) 343-0860
  • AXA/Equitable: Jonathan.Laven@equitable.com
  • Metlife: dkrout@financialguide.com
  • TIAA/Cref: Jawn Skrabacz, jawn.skrabacz@tiaa.org, (980) 249-4262
  • Valic/AIG (Corebridge) Financial: Jeffrey.Fehrmann@aig.com, peter.garzelloni@corebridgefinancial.com
  • The Legend Group (also known as Lincoln Investments): donaldwade@legendequities.com
  • Ameriprise
What is a 457(b) plan?

A 457(b) plan is an employer-sponsored, tax-favored retirement savings offered to public service employees and some nonprofit organization employees. Like a 401(k) plan, a 457(b) lets you contribute pre-tax dollars from your paycheck, invest it, and not pay taxes on it until you withdraw it, usually for retirement. If a participant has reached the limit of their 403(b) account(s), they may also participate in these plans.

What 457(b) plan is offered at NEIU?
  • SURS (managed by VOYA)
  • CMS (managed by Empower) for employees who contributed to SURS before 2011, (833) 969-4532

Long Term Disability

Long term disability is administered through the State Universities Retirement System (SURS). You may be eligible for a disability benefit after you have at least two years of service credit and you become unable to perform the duties of your position with a SURS-covered employer because of illness or injury. There is no minimum service credit required if you become disabled because of an accident.
