Kontras String Quartet

The Kontras String Quartet will return to Northeastern Illinois University to perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 22, in the Recital Hall, 3701 W. Bryn Mawr Ave., as part of the Jewel Box Series. Joining Kontras will be Northeastern faculty artists Susan Tang on piano and baritone Robert Heitzinger.

Admired for its virtuosity, vibrancy and energy, the Kontras String Quartet has established an international reputation for its captivating and disciplined artistry. Formed while the group’s members were string principals in the Chicago Symphony’s Civic Orchestra, Kontras has studied closely with such luminaries as the Vermeer Quartet and celebrated conductor and educator Cliff Colnot.

The program will include:

  • Franz Joseph Haydn: String Quartet in G Maj., Op. 33 No. 5
  • Dmitri Shostakovich: String Quartet No. 9 in E-flat Major, Op. 117
  • Réjean Coallier: Cycle de mélodies sur des poèmes de Sylvain Garneau pour quatour à cordes et baryton
  • Robert Schumann: Piano Quintet in E-flat major, Op. 44

This performance is a part of the Jewel Box Series, an eight-concert professional performing arts series presented by Northeastern’s Office of Cultural Events.
