Northeastern Illinois University Associate Vice President for Student Affairs Daniel Lopez has been elected president of the Illinois Latino Council on Higher Education (ILACHE) Board.

Lopez succeeds Andrew Sund, president of St. Augustine College (Chicago), who stepped down from the position this month. Lopez had previously served as ILACHE’s vice president and annual conference chair.

“I am humbled, and I appreciate the trust the Board has placed in me,” Lopez said. “I know it will be a lot of responsibility, but I also know that I will not be doing it alone.”

Lopez will oversee an organization that is dedicated to the advancement of the status of Latinos through educational policy reform, advocacy, identification of best practices and dissemination of research and information.

Lopez, who has more than 20 years of experience in higher education, has served in several capacities at Northeastern, including as director of El Centro and as an instructor in the College of Education. He also developed and implemented the Undocumented Students Project that assists faculty and staff who work with undocumented students and their families.
