Facility Policies

Make the most of your visit by learning about the various facility policies.

  • Eligibility: Membership is available to NEIU students (included in fees), faculty, staff, alumni, and community members.
    • NEIU Student Eligibility: NEIU Students enrolled in 6 credit hours for the current semester have access to Campus Recreation with their student fees.
    • NEIU Staff, Faculty, Alumni, and Community Members are able to purchase a membership or day pass.
  • Identification (ID) Card Requirements: All patrons entering the facility must provide a physical Government Issued ID with proof of age and picture to the front desk upon entry. NEIU Students, Staff, and Faculty may use their NEIU IDs.
    • Illegal entry, including a non-member using a member’s ID to access the building, is punishable by immediate removal from the building and subject to applicable university policy, state and local laws.
    • NEIU Campus Recreation Staff have the right to ask any individual to provide an NEIU ID card or government issued ID at any time 
  • Daily Passes
    • Adult Daily Pass ($10): Patrons 18+, must provide a physical Government Issued ID with proof of age and picture to purchase matched daily pass birthday and name.
      • No person/child 17 and under is allowed to purchase a daily pass on their own.
    • Adult and Child Daily Pass ($20): One adult 18+, must provide a physical Government Issued ID with proof of age and picture to purchase.
      • Adult will sign paper waiver for child
      • Adult will need to check out equipment/lockers, the child is unable to check out anything
      • Adult must be with child at all times throughout the facility
      • Children 16 & 17 can use fitness center and fitness equipment, 15 and under are not allowed to use fitness center and fitness equipment
  • Family Membership 
    • Family Memberships consist of up to 2 adults (18+) and 2 children (17 and under)  that live in the same household and can only be purchased by patrons that are 18+ up and must provide proof of age with a physical Government Issued ID.
    • Only the head of household/ primary customer can add patrons to membership and family members must be added at time of enrollment.
    • Family membership requires a physically in person signed waiver for all children and members confirmed by head of household.
    • There will be an additional membership fee for additional children 17.
  • Youth Access
    • Children Ages 16 & 17: May enter the facility if attached to a family membership with a physical High School/government issued ID unsupervised.
      • May use fitness center, fitness equipment, and check out equipment.
    • Children 15 and Under: Must enter facility with parent/guardian on the family membership.
      • Parent/guardian should be with child at all times
      • Unable to use fitness center and fitness equipment
      • Parent/guardian is responsible for checking out all equipment
  • Anyone assisting the unauthorized entrance of persons into the facility will be subject to expulsion from the PE Complex and Campus Recreation programs.
  • Hours of Operation: Hours are posted online and subject to change during holidays, breaks, and special events.

Campus Recreation and Student Affairs staff have authority over patron conduct and the use of equipment. Failure to comply with these policies may result in removal from the facility and further university sanctioning.

  • Bags and personal belongings must be stored in lockers.
  • Unauthorized use of facilities for instructing, training, or coaching is prohibited.
  • Campus Recreation is not responsible for any lost or stolen items. Rental lockers are available.
  • Attire
    • Proper athletic attire and athletic closed toe shoes are required. In all spaces except the locker room, patrons must wear appropriate athletic attire that covers the chest and buttocks. Attire that causes damage to equipment or potential injury is prohibitied.
      • Patrons are encouraged to bring a second pair of shoes for recreational activity when there is inclement weather including snow/salt on the ground, rain or sleet or other weather effects that can impact the rec center floors.
  • Closing Time
    • All areas, including locker rooms, should be vacated prior to building closure. Reminders will be made 15 min prior to closing, 5 minutes prior to closing. All equipment and towels should be returned to the Equipment Desk 5 min prior to closing.
  • Food
    • Food, gum, and drinks are only permitted in the lobby area of the PE Complex. Water is the only drink permitted in the activity spaces of the PE Complex and must be in an enclosed, unbreakable container.
    • Food and drinks during special events must be pre-approved by the Campus Recreation staff.
  • Personal Transportation
    • No wheeled recreational vehicles of any kind (skateboards, bikes, scooters, roller skates, strollers, hover boards, etc.) are allowed in the PE Complex. Bike racks are available in front of the PE Complex.
  • Pets
    • Pets and emotional support animals are not allowed in the facility. Service animals are permitted.
  • Photography, Videography, Music & Media Access Policies
    • Personal photography and videotaping are permitted at Campus Recreation facilities except for restrooms, locker rooms, and pool. Personal photography and videotaping are defined as media of friends/family obtaining consent informally for personal/private use. Personal photography used for commercial purposes is not allowed. Taking photos or videos of individuals without their consent is prohibited and is cause for immediate removal of Campus Recreation facilities.
    • Photography and videography for academic or commercial purposed including class projects, promotion, etc. is prohibited without prior approval. For approval of photography or filmography, email campusrec@neiu.edu. Requests must be at least 5 business days in advance.
  • Music: no personal music may be played without headphones unless part of a specific program and/or event with prior authorization from Campus Recreation.

  • The Boxing and Martial Arts Room is scheduled for club sport practices, student organization practices, group fitness classes, and other rental groups. 
  • NEIU Students and Campus Recreation members can ask for access to the Boxing and Martial Arts Room at the Equipment Desk and must have a valid NEIU student ID or Campus Recreation member ID. 
  • Combat-type and multi-person activities are only permitted with approved reservation and supervision/instruction.
  • Proper athletic attire that covers chest and buttocks and athletic non-marking, closed toe shoes are required. Attire that causes potential injury or damage to equipment including but not limited to zippers, buttons, metal rivets, watches, and rings is prohibited.
  • All equipment and pads used should be cleaned before and after use by the participant. 
  • Shoes are optional, but may only be removed once in the martial arts area.  Closed-toed shoes are mandatory in all other areas of the PE Complex.
  • Individuals with skin infections, open lesions, or open cuts are not allowed on the mat. 
  • If there is blood on the mat, the activity must stop immediately. Notify a Campus Recreation Staff member for proper clean up. 
  • No contact sparring.
  • No spitting. 
  • Use of facilities for paid instruction or coaching is prohibited. 
  • Boxing gloves, MMA gloves, or wraps are recommended when using the heavy bag.
  • Martial arts weapons like wooden swords, staffs, nun-chucks, or similar martial art weapons  are only permitted during reservations approved by Campus Recreation and with supervised instruction. No  metal weapons are permitted at any time. 
  • Open Recreation
    • During “open recreation” or non reserved time, solo bag work and practice is allowed. 
    • Multi-person combat is not allowed.
    • Grappling or wrestling during open recreation is not allowed.
    • Martial arts weapons like wooden swords, staffs, nun-chucks, or similar martial art weapons  are barred during open recreation. 

Main Gym and Auxiliary Gym Policies

  • Proper athletic attire that covers chest and buttocks and athletic non-marking, closed toe shoes are required. Attire that causes damage to equipment or potential injury is prohibited.
  • Some scheduled activities and rentals may take priority of open recreation.
  • Unauthorized use of courts for instructing, training, or coaching is prohibited. Courts may be rented for this purpose and must follow all rental guidelines. 
  • Personal belongings must be kept in a locker or cubby. 
  • Water must be in an enclosed, unbreakable container. Food, gum, and drinks other than water are prohibited in the court areas.
  • Excessive grabbing or hanging on the rim is prohibited. Intentionally hanging on the rim for extended periods of time, especially for showboating or to taunt opponents, is prohibited and could result in disciplinary action.
  • Rollerblades, skates, or other wheeled sports are not permitted. 
  • No personal music may be played externally or with speakers unless part of a specific program and/or event with prior authorization from Campus Recreation. 
  • The courts must be vacated 10 minutes prior to closing.
  • Open Recreation
    • Training or coaching during open recreation court times is not permitted.
    • During open recreation hours, all basketball courts at the PE Complex  are on the challenge court system. In the challenge court system, the losing team must vacate the court to be replaced by the challenging team. Efforts must be made to include other individuals not currently playing in a game; but should additional players be needed to constitute a team, the person offering the challenge may select players from the losing team. A person playing in a game may not challenge until the game in which they are playing ends. The winning team may stay on the court for no more than two consecutive games. 
    • Challenge Court Game Rules
      • Basketball games are to be played to 15 baskets, win by 2 baskets. Games cannot be won on a three-point shot.
      • Volleyball games are played to 15 points using rally scoring.
      • Soccer games are played for 20 minutes. The team with the most points after 20 minutes is the winner.
      • Badminton games are played to 11 points.

Racquetball Court Policies

  • Protective eyewear is recommended and should be properly worn. 

Fitness Center

  • Participants must have an active waiver on file before using any of the equipment, and must be at least 16 years of age.
  • Equipment of any type must be wiped down after each use.
  • Cardiovascular machine use is limited to 30 minutes. Please be respectful of others and abide by the time limit when the facility is busy.
  • All equipment must be used in the manner for which it is designed. Standing and/or stepping up on weight benches or hanging upside down from equipment are prohibited.
  • All equipment must be used in the manner for which it is designed. Standing or stepping up on weight benches, hanging upside down from equipment, using handheld weights with cardiovascular equipment, walking/running backwards or sideways, and having more than one person using a machine are prohibited.
  • Individuals are responsible for checking equipment prior to each use. Broken or damaged equipment and/or equipment malfunctions should be reported to the Campus Recreation team immediately.
  • Proper athletic attire and athletic closed toe shoes are required. In all spaces except the locker-room, patrons must wear appropriate athletic attire that covers the chest and buttocks. Attire that causes damage to equipment or potential injury is prohibited.
  • Shoes must have a heel or heel straps. Wearing only socks or backless shoes will not be allowed.
  • Water must be in an enclosed, unbreakable container. Food, gum and drinks other than water are prohibited.
  • Collars must be used with all bars, and spotters when lifting heavy free weights.
  • All dumbbells, weights and weight plates must be re-racked after use.
  • The use of chalk is prohibited. 
  • Equipment must be returned to its proper storage area when finished.
  • Personal training other than that which is scheduled through Campus Recreation is prohibited.
  • Olympic lifts are prohibited (i.e. clean and jerk, snatch).
  • Other activities deemed unsafe or inappropriate by Campus Recreation Staff will not be allowed.
  • Keep workout areas clear of unused equipment.
  • Personal belongings must be kept in a locker or cubby. Bags, coats, extra clothing, etc. are not permitted in the workout areas.

  • Participants must have an active waiver on file before using any of the equipment, and must be at least 16 years of age.
  • Studio 1 and Studio 2 are able to be used for open recreation for NEIU students and Campus Recreation members when it is unlocked, as long as there is not a class or meeting in there.
  • No personal music may be played without headphones unless part of a specific program and/or event with prior authorization from Campus Recreation. 
  • Equipment must be returned to its proper storage area when finished.
  • Equipment of any type must be wiped down after each use.
  • Personal training other than that which is scheduled through Campus Recreation is prohibited.
  • Proper athletic attire that covers the chest and buttocks and athletic closed toe shoes are required in these spaces and for all group fitness classes. Attire that causes damage to equipment or potential injury is prohibited. Wearing only socks or backless shoes will not be allowed. Yoga and Pilates classes are an exception.
  • No heels or platforms are allowed in these spaces at any time. 
  • Personal belongings must be kept in a locker or cubby where available.
  • Separate closed-toe shoes are recommended for classes. Street shoes can damage the hardwood floors.
  • Water must be in an enclosed, unbreakable container. Food, gum, and drinks are prohibited.
  • If student organizations want to reserve any studio, they can do so by submitting a request in 25Live 10 business days in advance.

  • NEIU and Campus Recreation are not responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged property.

  • Lost items should be turned in to the front desk.
  • Found items will be held for 14 days before disposal or donation.

  • Run or walk in the direction indicated by the arrow.
  • Use the inside lane for walking and the outside lane for running. 
  • Non-marking, spike-free athletic shoes are required. 
  • Store personal items in a locker or cubby available throughout the facility. 
  • No free weights or fitness equipment is permitted on the track.
