NEIU Libraries Laptop Loan Terms and Conditions

General Information

  • Laptops are available to currently enrolled NEIU students only. Laptop use is non-transferable.
  • If a student borrower withdraws from all of their courses in a given semester, they are responsible for returning the borrowed laptop immediately or the laptop will be considered lost/stolen.
  • All students must present an NEIU student photo ID or a valid government-issued ID at check-out. 
  • Reservations for a laptop are first come, first served. 
  • The NEIU Libraries reserve the right to terminate this agreement at any time and for any reason.

Loan Periods and Limits

  • The library offers short-term (14-day) and long-term (full semester) loans. 
  • Long-term loans must be renewed at midterm. 
  • No laptop may be renewed beyond one (1) semester.
  • Student borrowers agree to honor the renewal and due dates established by the NEIU Libraries.

Data Management and Release of Liability

  • NEIU Libraries issued laptops are the property of NEIU. Students do not retain any privacy interests in the contents of NEIU-issued laptops.
  • The NEIU Libraries are not responsible for any liability, damages, or expenses resulting from use or misuse of the equipment, including but not limited to data loss.

Device Usage Guidelines and Restrictions

  • This equipment will be used for University-related educational purposes only and in accordance with state and University policies.
  • Only the NEIU Library Tech Desk may provide technical service for the equipment.
  • Tampering with library equipment, including security functions, is prohibited.

Lost, Stolen, or Damaged Equipment

  • All components (laptop, charger) must be returned in order to be considered fully checked in.
  • In the event that equipment is lost or stolen, student borrowers must file a police report and notify the NEIU Libraries Tech Desk at libtechdesk@neiu.edu immediately.
  • In the event of equipment damage, student borrowers must email the NEIU Libraries Tech Desk immediately at libtechdesk@neiu.edu.

Consequences and Liability

  • After the Library’s reasonable attempts to recover overdue equipment fail, equipment will be presumed lost. To avoid University sanctions and criminal prosecution, the equipment must be returned immediately or the replacement fee paid in full pursuant to the State of Illinois Property Control Act 30 ILCS 605 and University Property Control Policy F1.09.
    • The replacement fee for a Dell 7420 laptop is $1,544.
    • The replacement fee for a Dell 14 ProPlus laptop is $1,304. 
    • The replacement fee for a Dell 14 Pro laptop is $818. 
    • The replacement fee for a charging cord is $35.
  • Failure to renew or return equipment in a timely fashion may result in the termination of laptop borrowing privileges.
  • Failure to disclose equipment loss or damage immediately may result in the termination of laptop borrowing privileges.
