Visiting Artist Program
Each semester, the NEIU Art + Design Visiting Artist Program offers two residency opportunities for emerging to mid-career Chicago-based artists:
- NEIU Art + Design Studio Residency
- NEIU Art + Design RISO Residency
Visiting Artists are awarded an honorarium and have a semester-long access to NEIU Art + Design facilities specific to their project. Over the course of their residency, the Visiting Artist showcases their work in a public academic forum, leads a hands-on workshop, and participates in a Portfolio Review Day for NEIU’s Art + Design students. They also have a culminating group exhibition with fellow residents in the NEIU Fine Arts Center Gallery.
The Visiting Artist Program strives to create visible connections between our diverse population of art and design students with working artists who embody these identities. This interaction provides invaluable insights and inspiration to our students, fostering a dynamic exchange of ideas and techniques. Visiting Artists should demonstrate a commitment to their artistic practice and an interest in engaging with NEIU’s students and creative community.

Upcoming Residents
Studio Resident, Fall 2026
Monika Plioplyte weaves together printed and cut paper, photographs, and other handmade elements into narrative collages, that explore memory, language, and the fluid states of “in-betweenness” shaped by my immigrant experience. Drawing from Lithuanian Baltic folklore, female archetypes, inherited stories, and personal rituals, she creates textile inspired patterns that serve as visual metaphors for how personal and collective identities are formed. Plioplyte has exhibited nationally at venues including the Hyde Park Art Center, Monique Meloche, Davis Center at Harvard University, and AREA Gallery; and has attended residencies at MASS MoCa, The Center Program, and Haystack. Plioplyte was born in Lithuania, and lives and works in Chicago.
RISO Resident, Fall 2026
Riesling Dong is a Chicago-based book artist and graphic designer whose bold, experimental approach to publishing challenges the conventions of the traditional book. She treats the book as a sculptural form—a medium for storytelling, information, and embodied experience. Her practice seeks to deepen the viewer’s engagement and understanding, creating objects that hold meaning through every typographic, structural, and material choice. Her work investigates how design and physical form guide a reader’s movement through narrative—inviting participation, touch, and reflection. Dong has exhibited at SoNa Gallery, 4C Gallery, Zhou B Art Center, and is in the Joan Flasch Artists’ Book Collection.
