APIDA heritage month events

Join the Angelina Pedroso Center for Diversity and Intercultural Affairs throughout April to
celebrate the diversity and contributions of Asian Pacific Islander Desi American (APIDA)
communities to the cultural mosaic of our nation. APIDA Heritage Month also serves as a
reminder of the work that remains to address ongoing discrimination and racism faced by
people of Asian descent. This year’s national theme is "Power in Unity: Strengthening
Communities Together" The month of April also marks National Poetry and Sexual Assault
Awareness Month.


Artist Talk: Jasjyot Singh Hans
Tuesday, March 31, 3:00 - 5:00 p.m.
Main Campus, Pedroso Center
In collaboration with the Art + Design Department and Women and Gender Studies, the
Pedroso Center will host an Artist talk with Jasjyot Singh Hans. Jasjyot Singh Hans is joining the
Art + Design Department as the RISO Resident this Spring Semester. His work focuses on body
image, sexuality and self-love as a queer Sikh man. Jasjyot will speak about his art practice
followed by a Q&A session. Refreshments will be served.
 

Coffee Talk: Study Smarter not Harder

Are you ready for finals? Want to make the most of your study time and study with your peers
effectively? Learn new time management skills and study techniques using the Pomodoro
Technique w/ Sana Habiya from the NEIU Center of Health and enjoy coffee and study friendly

Caminos Profesionales: Careers, Community, and Real-World Experience

Caminos Profesionales is a career-focused engagement opportunity designed to connect
students with professionals who can share real-world insight into career pathways, workplace
realities, and professional growth. This event, in collaboration with Career Development, centers
practical guidance, representation, and relationship-building, helping students explore careers
through lived experience rather than just job descriptions. Professionals from diverse fields,
including supply chain, business, operations, and related industries, will be invited to share their
journeys and lessons learned.

Women’s History Month Art Contest Winners’ Ceremony

The Winners of the Women’s History Month Art Contest will be announced and receive gift
cards from BLICK Art Supply during a celebration in the Pedroso Center. Refreshments will be
served.

Words without fear: Poetry, Healing, and Expression

Words without fear: Poetry, Healing, and Expression is a poetry-based gathering held in
celebration of National Poetry Month, designed to create a supportive and expressive space
where students can explore their emotions, stories, and lived experiences through writing.
Guided by a poet artist who dedicates their work to poetry and storytelling, students will learn
how poetry can serve as a tool for reflection, healing, and self-expression. Co-sponsored by
Student Health Services and the Unscripted Grant Program.

Alas de Justicia: Eco-Justicia, Cultura, and Monarch Migration
Wednesday, April 22 (Earth Day), 4:00 - 6:00 p.m.
Main Campus, Student Union Room 214
In collaboration with Proyecto Pa’Lante, Alas de Justicia is an Earth Day gathering that
connects Indigenous and Latin American cultural practices with environmental justice,
sustainability, and land protection. Centered on the life and legacy of Homero Gómez González,
the event highlights the cultural and ecological importance of monarch butterflies and the
communities that protect them.
