African and African American Studies, Minor

The African and African American Studies Minor (AFAM) is the study, research, interpretation and dissemination of knowledge about Africans both on the continent of Africa and in the Diaspora.

Why Study African and African American Studies at NEIU

Interdisciplinary in both conception and practice, the AFAM program is designed to critically examine the structure, organization, contributions, and perspectives of Africa and its peoples throughout the Diaspora. A major paradigm that informs the program’s curriculum is an African-Centered epistemological framework that proceeds from a position internal to the cultures of African peoples. This approach is used concurrent with an awareness of and openness to the variation and richness of the total human experience.

Benefits

Many NEIU students, majoring in a variety of disciplines, express interest in an African and African American Studies (AFAM) minor.  Yet, students sometimes wonder what it would look like to combine an AFAM minor with their chosen major. Deciding to declare a minor is a great choice; rich classroom experiences allow you to make connections that you will find exciting. Additionally, deciding to declare a minor is appealing to future employers and graduate programs. This document, the NEIU AFAM Major-Minor Connector Tool, provides information about:

  • What your academic experience might look like with your major-of-interest combined with an AFAM minor.
  • What careers are the best fit for your combination of AFAM minor and chosen major.
  • What graduate school programs you might want to consider, given your major combined with an AFAM minor.

For additional guidance about the AFAM minor, please contact AFAM Minor Coordinator Courtney Francis at c-francis1@neiu.edu or visit LWH 3067.
