Dear University Community,
It is an honor to be President during an historic year at Northeastern Illinois University. Our sesquicentennial is an opportunity to reflect on the past 150 years, envision the next 150 years and take stock of where we are today.
No matter how we look at it, one thing is clear: We are an institution that can overcome any challenge, no matter how insurmountable it might seem. This is a common theme you'll find in Richard Lindberg's new, wonderfully written history book, "Northeastern Illinois University: The First 150 Years."
Another theme in the book is the strength and diversity of our University's Community. We have been successful as an institution because of the people who make up this Community. Our yearlong celebration of our sesquicentennial is just as much about them (and the many who have preceded them) as it is about the past 15 decades.
Finally, I want to thank all of you who are helping me honor our 150 years, especially the NEIU150 Committee, which is co-chaired by Shelley Bannister, Professor Emeritus and Special Assistant to the President, and Mike Dizon, Chief Marketing and Communications Officer. This committee has created this website as well as planned a variety of events and activities throughout the year. I hope you will join me in the festivities and be a part of our history.
Richard J. Helldobler, Ph.D.
