The LSAT and GRE
The Law School Admission Test (LSAT) is the primary standardized test required for admission to most law schools in the United States. While some law schools are beginning to accept the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores, the LSAT is still widely preferred and considered the most relevant assessment for legal studies.
- The LSAT is administered through the Law School Admissions Commission (LSAC). The LSAT consists of Reading Comprehension, Logical Reasoning, and Argumentative Writing. It takes 3.5 hours to complete, and the score is valid for 5 years. The LSAT is offered 7 times a year, and applicants can take it up to 3 times a year and 5 times within the past 5 years, with a lifetime limit of 7 times. LSAC/LSAT fee waivers are available for those who qualify.
- The GRE evaluates skills like verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, and analytical writing. You can take the GRE General Test up to five times within a rolling 12-month period. There's a mandatory waiting period of at least 21 days between each attempt. There is no lifetime limit on the number of times you can take the GRE.
