Biography
She is a first-generation Mexican-American, a Chicago native, and a product of the Chicago Public Schools (CPS) system. She is the eldest of three children and the first in her family to attend college. Her parents, who had minimal formal education, instilled in her the importance of pursuing higher education. She earned her associate’s degree in applied science with a concentration in computer systems from Robert Morris College (RMC), followed by a bachelor’s degree in studio art from Northeastern Illinois University (NEIU). After raising her two children as a widow and ensuring their focus on education and well-being, she made the decision to return to school to pursue a Master’s degree in Higher Education through the NEIU ENLACE program. Her motivation for pursuing this degree stems from a desire to support students in their personal and academic growth, particularly because she navigated much of her own undergraduate experience without guidance. She is drawn to student affairs and higher education due to her deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities students encounter throughout their academic journeys. Returning to school after many years has reinforced for her the critical importance of support systems in higher education, and she is committed to helping create inclusive and empowering environments for students. As she works toward completing her Master’s degree, she is eager to build a career in student affairs, where she can promote student engagement, well-being, and success. Outside of her academic and professional goals, family and friends, art, and self-care are central to her life. Meditation helps keep her grounded amid life’s demands, and spending quality time with loved ones brings her joy. She enjoys painting as a form of self-expression and relaxation, and she often turns to music to unwind and recharge. She also appreciates dining out, whether exploring new restaurants or returning to favorite spots. She strives to maintain a balanced life centered on meaningful connections, peaceful moments, and the simple pleasures that bring fulfillment each day.
