Biography
Danny Cortez is the Associate Director of Latinx Student Engagement at Northeastern Illinois University, where he leads culturally responsive programming and initiatives that support student success, belonging, and community building. As a first-generation college graduate from Chicago’s Logan Square neighborhood with roots from Acapulco, Guerrero, Danny brings both personal and professional experience to his work with students and families.
In his role, Danny develops and oversees programs such as Latinx Family Day, Mujeres Que Inspiran, and campus-wide heritage programming, while also supporting the development of Proyecto PUENTES, a bilingual academic pathway designed to support Spanish-speaking students in their transition to higher education. His work focuses on creating inclusive spaces where students feel seen, supported, and empowered to navigate their academic journeys.
Danny is deeply committed to building partnerships across Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, and community organizations to expand access and strengthen support systems for historically underserved students. His leadership is grounded in collaboration, cultural relevance, and a strong belief that when students and families feel connected to their institution, they are more likely to thrive.
He is currently pursuing a Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) in Education Policy, Organization, and Leadership at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where his work focuses on advancing equity and belonging in higher education.
