Northeastern Illinois University's undergraduate Computer Science program earns accreditation
Thursday, December 18 2025
Northeastern Illinois University’s bachelor's degree in Computer Science has been accredited by the Computing Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), a nonprofit, ISO 9001-certified quality assurance organization.
Through the accreditation of academic programs, recognition of credentials and assessment of student learning, ABET supports excellence in education worldwide. ABET accreditation assures that programs meet standards to produce graduates that are leading the way in innovation and emerging technologies and anticipating the welfare and safety needs of the public.
Housed within the College of Business and Technology (CBT), the Bachelor of Science in Computer Science takes a broader, more integrative approach to the field. Students receive a thorough introduction to programming languages, computer architecture, operating systems, and scientific and mathematical theories while expanding their mindsets and communication skills through the University’s liberal arts–based core.
“The ABET accreditation for the B.S. in Computer Science program is a great accomplishment,” said Northeastern Interim Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs R. Shayne Cofer, Ph.D. “I thank and congratulate the faculty and staff in the CBT and Department of Computer Science.”
Sought worldwide, ABET's voluntary peer-review process is highly respected because it adds critical value to academic programs in the technical disciplines, where quality, precision and safety are of the utmost importance.
“ABET accreditation for the bachelor’s degree in Computer Science ensures that the College of Business and Technology is providing a state-of-the-art degree program as desired by industry leaders," said Dean of CBT Michael Bedell, Ph.D. "This public recognition will enhance the value and employability of our students.”
Developed by technical professionals from ABET’s member societies, ABET criteria focus on what students experience and learn. ABET accreditation reviews look at program curricula, faculty, facilities and institutional support. It’s conducted by teams of highly skilled professionals from industry, academia and government, with expertise in the ABET disciplines. As of Oct. 1, 2024, ABET accredited 4,773 programs at 930 colleges and universities in 41 countries and areas.
“This milestone reflects the dedication of our faculty and the achievements of our students in Computer Science," said Chair and Professor of Computer Science Xiwei Wang, Ph.D. “ABET accreditation strengthens the value of their degrees, giving our graduates wider recognition and greater opportunities to thrive in their careers and contribute to innovation in a rapidly evolving field.”
