The University: Northeastern Illinois University is a state supported institution located in the northwest section of Chicago. It is located eight miles from downtown Chicago and twenty minutes from O’Hare International Airport. The university enrolls approximately 9,000 commuter students. Department: The Department of Special Education at Northeastern Illinois University prepares reflective professionals who transform the lives of individuals with exceptionality. The department offers: two initial licensure programs, one at the undergraduate level and one at the graduate level; and an advanced graduate program for special educators who desire licensure in the areas of behavior intervention specialist and/or curriculum adaptation specialist. Faculty teach at the main and off site campuses.
Qualifications: Requirements include an earned doctorate in special education or a related field, three years teaching experience, and a demonstrated commitment to diversity. This position will also need to understand the importance of and contribute to student success. Use of technology to enhance teaching is required. The ideal candidate has expertise in special education instructional methodologies including universal design for learning approaches for individuals with mild to moderate and/or moderate to severe/profound disabilities. This is a shared position with Teacher Education. The ideal candidate also has expertise in the area/s of Early Childhood Education, Bilingual Education, and/or Elementary Education. Experience as a P-12 teacher is expected. Expertise in instructional methodology, knowledge of or experience in working with English-language learners, knowledge of or experience with edTPA, knowledge of or experience with CEC accreditation, ability to do program coordination and experience with quality online delivery systems is preferred.
Responsibilities: Responsibilities include teaching in graduate and undergraduate level programs in special education at on and off site campuses, advisement duties and ongoing collaboration on program improvements, research and university/community service activities.
