The Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students(VP/Dean) is the chief student affairs officer for the University and reports directly to the President. The VP/Dean provides leadership and vision in administering a comprehensive range of programs and services that support NEIU student success, satisfaction, retention and graduation.
Founded in 1867, Northeastern Illinois University enrolls more than 7,000 students through the College of Arts and Sciences, the Daniel L. Goodwin College of Education, the College of Business and Management and the College of Graduate Studies and Research. Northeastern is regarded as the most diverse public comprehensive university in the Midwest and is designated by the U.S. Department of Education as a Hispanic-Serving Institution. Northeastern offers more than 40 undergraduate degree and certificate programs and more than 50 graduate degree, certificate, licensure and endorsement programs.
Northeastern’s Main Campus is located on 67 acres in a residential area on the Northwest Side of Chicago. The University has three additional locations in the metropolitan area: the Jacob H. Carruthers Center for Inner City Studies, El Centro and the Center for College Access and Success. Northeastern also is a founding member of the University Center of Lake County consortium campus in suburban Lake County, north of Chicago.
Minimum Qualifications and Responsibilities:
An earned doctoral degree preferred, and at least six (6) years of progressive leadership experience in Student Affairs administration at an accredited college or university.
Demonstrated effectiveness in planning, administration, personnel, facilities, and fiscal management; demonstrated effectiveness in working with a diverse student body faculty, staff and other university constituents, and external organizations; ability to work collaboratively with other campus units; a strong understanding of governmental programs, agencies and laws that specifically address university and student issues; excellent interpersonal skills to represent student Affairs and NEIU with enthusiasm and effectiveness, and leadership in higher education/Student Affairs professional associations.
The VP/Dean will provide leadership and vision for the planning, organizing, and coordinating of Student Affairs unite while achieving University goals and objectives. Establish and implement short and long-range organizational goals, strategic plans, policies and operating procedures. Monitor and evaluate programmatic and operational effectiveness and efficiency, and effect changes required for continuous improvement.
In partnership with the Provost and other university leaders, provide vision and leadership for achieving retention and student success goals through the development, implementation and assessment of educationally-purposeful academic support services and co-curricular programs that meet the varying needs of a diverse student population at an urban metropolitan university with multiple locations.
Promote a welcoming, accessible and vibrant campus culture. Work directly with student groups to provide support, advocacy and resources.
Provide leadership for the development of an intentionally-inclusive university community that supports a diverse student body through student programs and services that support multiculturalism and social justice.
Oversee the Student Code of Conduct: ensure that policies are aligned with laws and best practices; develop resources to ensure community awareness of student expectations; maintain processes for student judicial proceedings.
Design, implement and maintain an organizational structure and staffing to effectively accomplish the organization’s goals and objectives; oversee recruitment, training, supervision, processional development and evaluation of Student Affairs professional and student staff.
Maintain a visible profile at the university and with external constituencies and actively engage with the student, staff and faculty communities.
Manage the Student Affairs resources and budgets. Ensure appropriate use of state funding and student fees. Maintain compliance with federal/state regulations and university policies.
Provide leadership for directing NEIU-wide activities related to student due process/judicial proceedings. Ensure that the university has appropriate policies and procedures for conducting investigations and hearings on student judicial maters.
Develop programs, policies and procedures that support a healthy and safe university community. Assist with university-wide crisis/emergency response and provide support to students and families in emergency situations.
Ensure successful operations of the Student Government Association as an important component of university shared governance.
Represent the university at local, state and national meetings on matters related to student success.
Attend Board of Trustees meetings and any other meetings as designated by the President.
Serve, with the Provost, as staff liaison to the NEIU Board of Trustees Academic/Student Affairs, Enrollment Management and Technology Committee.
Perform all other duties necessary to accomplish the educational objective of NEIU and/or as assigned by the President.
