About the Postdoctoral Experience

Northeastern Illinois University Student Counseling Services has a long history of involvement in various levels of clinical training. Since 2004, Counseling Services has offered postdoctoral training in psychology, providing advanced professional training in a multicultural university counseling setting.

The focus of the postdoctoral experience involves solidifying clinical and supervision skills, deepening self-awareness and self-reflection, strengthening multicultural competency, and developing professional independence while completing 1,750 supervised hours to meet licensure requirements in the state of Illinois. This is accomplished by joining the clinical team in:

  • Direct clinical services (intakes, walk-ins, crisis intervention, and individual, couples and/or group therapy)
  • Outreach and consultation to the University community
  • Training and supervision activities (e.g., individual and/or group supervision, involvement with the training seminar, and involvement with the search processes for trainees)
  • Training, clinical and administrative meetings
  • Individual supervision and supervision of supervision

Additionally, the postdoctoral fellow is provided the complete State of Illinois employee benefit package, which includes health, dental and life insurance, retirement programs and other features.
