In these times, Pedroso Center in collaboration with Pin@y Club, NPB and SGA would like to extend an invitation to our NEIU community as we celebrate Asian American Heritage Month. For our first event we are inspired to gather with friends of varied backgrounds and experiences to join us in decorating and flying your own kite.
As a symbol of resistance, kites have long served as a tool for reclaiming joy and community-building in the face of oppression.

Join the Pedroso Center and Dirt & Free Herbal Arts for a self-care workshop facilitated by Peregrine (they/siya/she).
Dirt & Free Herbal Arts specialize in seasonal place-based herbal remedies and pantry provisions, interweaving diasporic traditions and culturally responsive blends to build access, connection, and education on multiple levels.
Peregrine is a founder and co-steward of Freedom Fighter Herbs, a care network and food sovereignty project in Chicago.

Workshop On navigating ASIAN-AMERICAN student conflict with parents

Join Pedroso Center, Pin@y Club, the SGA, NPB, and our community partner Apna Ghar, a community organization addressing gender-based violence in immigrant and refugee communities, for a workshop on navigating Asian American student conflict with parents and other family members over academics, career choice, interracial relationships, and arranged marriage.
Asian American students suffer high rates of anxiety and depression and some of the highest rates of suicide. These problems are often fueled by conflict with families over their college major and career choices, gender identity and sexual orientation, interracial or interfaith intimate partnerships, and arranged marriage. Staff from Apna Ghar will help us to discuss these issues. During this event we will openly discuss topics of Asian American students' mental health, family dynamics, and gender-based violence. Discussion will include ways to increase emotional, mental, and physical safety and how we can support one another in preventing harm and supporting those who have experienced harm from a family member or other loved ones. This will be an opportunity for Asian American students to educate community agencies about the pressures and challenges they face and to talk about the many positive aspects and diversity of Asian American families, cultural identity, and heritage that help to sustain Asian American students in difficult times. Participants will learn about resources, legal remedies, and supportive contacts on campus that can help them and others who experience family conflicts and pressure.
