Tenure-track Position: Assistant Professor, Graphic Design
Qualified candidates should have an MFA or MDes in Graphic Design, or an equivalent terminal degree, and relevant professional experience. Prior teaching experience and a record of professional/creative practice are required.
We seek applicants experienced in print and the expanded field of graphic design, with a strong perspective and established problem-solving skills. They must demonstrate an interest and ability to collaborate with University colleagues, as well as the Chicago design community, and to contribute to a curriculum responsive to student needs. The candidate will also contribute to University efforts to address student enrollment, retention and success, including an overall commitment to teaching at both the upper division and introductory level, as well as provide support for requirements such as First Year Experience, University Core Curriculum and the Writing Intensive Program.
The successful applicant will have experience as a practicing designer and educator who can create an inspiring learning environment for a diverse body of students. They will emphasize teaching design process, understand the value of both digital and analog methodologies and stress the power of visual storytelling and authorship in design.
- A terminal degree (MFA, MDes or equivalent terminal degree) in Graphic Design or Visual Communication (required)
- Experience teaching at the college level (required)
- Evidence of professional/creative practice, including commercial design work (required)
- In-depth knowledge of typography and communication design theory (required)
- Ability to advise a diverse body of students, and especially mentor them as they transition to working in the field (required)
- A dynamic thinker and critical maker with excellent communication skills (required)
- Experience with creative coding (preferred)
