The NSF Noyce STEM Intern Program at Northeastern Illinois University is a partnership between NEIU and City Colleges of Chicago for college students interested in exploring careers in K-12 education. Through the Noyce STEM Intern Program, students come together in a learning community cohort and gain exposure to teaching careers in mathematics and science.
Overview
Noyce STEM Interns explore the field of teaching through a variety of experiences that include workshops and seminars with expert math and science educators, a paid summer internship with GEAR UP and/or TRIO Upward Bound Math and Science Academy summer programs, and networking with current and former Noyce Scholars.
Benefits

- Early field experience using robotics, coding, and modeling with students in grades 6-12 and current CPS teachers
- Mentorship by both Noyce Scholars faculty and classroom teachers from high-need CPS schools
- Hands-on experience in the GEAR UP or TRIO Upward Bound Math and Science Academy with high school students, teachers, parents, community members, and Center for College Access and Success (CCAS) staff consultants
- Informational seminars and workshops exploring the field of teaching with a strong emphasis on teaching in high-need school settings
Eligibility requirements
- Applicants must be undergraduate students at NEIU or the City Colleges of Chicago
- Demonstrated interest in exploring a career in STEM, particularly math and/or science education
- Applicants must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75
Requirements to be completed by the end of the program
- Completion of an early field experience with grade 6-12 students
- Attendance at designated workshops and professional development seminars
- Participation in mentorship with Noyce faculty or current in-service high school teacher
- Meetings with designated advisor at least once per semester for the duration of undergraduate studies

- Include a letter of recommendation from a high school teacher, a community college instructor, or a current NEIU professor (Tip: share this helpful instruction sheet when requesting a letter)
- Include current unofficial transcript from NEIU or the City Colleges of Chicago
