ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Applicants to the Graduate Programs in Literacy Education program must meet the admission requirements of the College of Graduate Studies and Research. For admission to the Graduate Programs in Literacy Education, candidates must provide evidence of:
- A current Illinois professional educator license endorsed for teaching
- Successful completion of a course in educational psychology
- A minimum grade point average of 2.75 in undergraduate work with a minimum grade point average of 3.0 in the education major coursework
- Successful completion of the Illinois Licensure Testing System Test of Basic Skills or the Test of Academic Proficiency
- Submission of a written essay focused on professional experiences and goals
PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS
Candidates begin with LTCY 502 and LTCY 513, followed by LTCY 504 and LTCY 506. When candidates have completed these courses, they can apply to take LTCY 507, Literacy Assessment and Instructional Planning. To qualify for this benchmark course, candidates must:
- have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0
- submit at least one Self Evaluation of Professional Dispositions
- submit a minimum of two Faculty Evaluations of Professional Disposition
- submit a preliminary assessment collection as specified by the department
The second benchmark in the program occurs when students are ready to register for their clinical practicum courses. Each student take two clinical courses: LTCY 509, Clinical Practicum, Literacy Assessment and Intervention at the Middle Level, and LTCY 510, Clinical Practicum, Literacy Assessment and Intervention at the Secondary Level. Students must apply for department approval to take these classes. They must also submit an additional Self Evaluation of Professional Dispositions as well as an additional Faculty Evaluation of Professional Dispositions. To receive credit for the clinical practicum courses, students must submit evidence of successful completion of the Reading Teacher Test #177 administered by the Illinois Certification Testing System.
FINAL EVALUATION
In the semester before they plan to complete their program, students apply for Final Evaluation. To qualify for Final Evaluation, students must:
- have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0
- have a minimum average score on the Faculty Evaluations of Professional Dispositions of 3 of 4 possible points
- submit evidence of the successful completion of the Reading Teacher Test #177
- submit evidence of the successful completion of the Assessment of Professional Teaching, 6-12
- submit a complete Assessment Collection
