The Department of Counselor Education offers a Non-Degree School Counselor Endorsement program designed for individuals who have completed a graduate degree in counseling or a closely-related field and are seeking to meet the academic and clinical requirements to be eligible for endorsement as a school counselor in the State of Illinois. 

Application Requirements

To be considered for admission, the applicant must submit the following to Graduate Admissions, Northeastern Illinois University, 5500 North St. Louis Avenue, Chicago, IL 60625. (The graduate admission application, non-degree endorsement application, resume, essay, Informed Consent, and copy of PEL may be emailed to graduateadmissions@neiu.edu):

  • Application for Admission to Graduate Programs (print out) or use the online application (with $30 fee)

  • Non-Degree Endorsement application (need to print hard copy to complete)

  • Official transcripts from all colleges/universities attended (must be in sealed envelopes or protectively e-scripted from the sending institution)

  • Two letters of recommendation (must be in a sealed envelope from the recommender or can be emailed from the recommender if completing the online Graduate Programs application)

  • Current resume (may be emailed to graduateadmissions@neiu.edu)

  • Essay: see Page 2 of the Non-Degree Endorsement application for instructions (the essay takes the place of the Statement of Goals and Objectives on the Graduate Programs application)

  • Informed Consent

  • Evidence of a Professional Educator License (PEL): for applicants who hold a PEL or

  • Results of a state and federal fingerprint background check: for applicants without a PEL

  • Successful completion of coursework in the following areas: counseling theories and interviewing, human growth and development; assessment and evaluation; individual and group counseling; career development; family counseling; and multicultural counseling. Those who have not successfully completed the necessary coursework may fulfill them during the course of their studies toward earning the Endorsement.

The courses required to complete the Non-Degree School Counselor Endorsement program are listed below. All courses are graduate courses:

For individuals who hold a PEL: 21 credit hours

  • COUN 410 Seminar in School Counseling (3 cr)

  • COUN 411 Post-Secondary College & Career Counseling (3 cr)

  • COUN 412 Topics in School Counseling (3 cr)

  • COUN 415 Children & Youth in School & Family Systems (3 cr)

  • COUN 442 Practicum: Group Supervision in School Counseling (3 cr)

  • COUN 462 Internship I: School Counseling (3 cr)

  • COUN 472 Internship II: School Counseling (3 cr)

The individual must also submit to the Department of Counselor Education a passing score of the #181 Content Test for School Counselor exam.

For individuals without a PEL: 33 credit hours

  • BLBC 440 Methods of Teaching ELL in Diverse Classrooms

  • SPED 404 Survey of the Field of Education or SPED 509 Methods I: Special Curriculum in Special Education

  • LTCY 402 Issues in Literacy Instruction or LTCY 501 Literacy Instruction in Elementary Grades

  • LTCY 502 Literacy Instruction Content Area: Secondary Grades or LTCY 513 Literacy Instruction for Middle Level Grades

  • COUN 410 Seminar in School Counseling (3 cr)

  • COUN 411 Post-Secondary College & Career Counseling (3 cr)

  • COUN 412 Topics in School Counseling (3 cr)

  • COUN 415 Children & Youth in School & Family Systems (3 cr)
