Research Interests 
I am conducting paleolimnological research to infer long-term changes in climate and environmental conditions. In particular, I analyze remains of diatom algae preserved in lake sediments. Diatoms have glass cell walls made of silica that allow them to be preserved for thousands of years. Because different species grow in different conditions, changes in species composition over time can be used to infer past conditions. For example, drought conditions might be inferred if shallow-water diatoms suddenly became predominant in sediment deposited at a specific time in the past. My research sites have included wetlands or lakes in the Everglades, Nicaragua, and northeastern Illinois.
