YAL Case Study 2005-06

Since 2000, Chicago Teachers’ Center’s popular Young Adult Literature Conference (YAL) has demonstrated how the combination of compelling books and engaging learning strategies can provide powerful learning experiences for middle and high school students. Teachers choose two conference books to read in advance, then participate in interactive workshops designed around those books. They leave with teaching strategies they can use immediately in their classrooms.

For the first time, we have selected the books for the Fall conference early so teachers can read over the summer. Register now and we will see you in St. Charles!

YAL gives high school and middle school teachers an opportunity to read, discuss, and participate in workshops structured around quality fiction and nonfiction texts. The Young Adult Literature Conference is free to teachers in GEAR UP (9th-12th), READwELL, and Cicero-Berwyn schools. $50 deposit required, refunded at the conference. $400.00 for teachers from non-partnership schools (discounts available for groups of three or more). Price includes two books, three meals, and an overnight stay in a private room.

Through the Units-for-Books Program, GEAR UP, READwELL, and Cicero-Berwyn teachers have the opportunity to write your own YAL unit and implement it with your students. In exchange, we provide a class set (30) of books to use with your students. We also ask that you participate in documentation of your unit and that you allow us to share it with other teachers by posting it on our website. For details follow the link to Units for Books.
