Center for Academic Writing

What is the Center for Academic Writing?

The Center for Academic Writing (CAW) is funded by a U.S. Department of Education Title V grant that was awarded to NEIU in September 2007. CAW is the home of the Writing Intensive Program (WIP) and provides support to departments, faculty, and instructors who are developing and teaching WIP courses and provides peer tutoring to students enrolled in WIP courses that have peer tutors attached to them.

How is the Center for Academic Writing different from the Learning Support Center?

CAW supports the teaching and learning in Writing Intensive (WIP) courses. The writing tutors in the Learning Support Center provide writing support for students across the university. Please contact the Learning Support Center (Library 4th floor or 773-442-4568) for more information about their services.

How is a Writing Intensive course different from other courses?

NEIU Writing Intensive (WIP) courses must meet the NEIU Writing Intensive Guidelines which call for a variety of writing assignments and activities to be assigned in a course. Students will receive active instruction in the writing of that discipline and at least fifty percent of the course grade will be determined through graded writing assignments. See the NEIU Writing Intensive Guidelines for more information.

Who

WIP peer tutors are undergraduates who have successfully completed the WIP course for which they tutor. They are not only good writers but also understand how to write within their discipline.

What

WIP peer tutors help students of all abilities become better writers by helping them focus on every step of the writing process—from brainstorming ideas, pre-writing, and outlining to drafting, revising, and editing. You do not need to have a completed draft to meet with peer tutors.

Peer tutors can provide the most effective help if students come early in the assignment process and return throughout the semester. Please remember peer tutors are not graders, proofreaders, or editors.

Types of Peer Tutoring

Face-to-Face Tutoring

WIP peer tutors are available during their scheduled 5 hours a week in CAW. We recommend that you make an appointment to work with a peer tutor.

Virtual Tutoring Appointments

WIP peer tutors are also available to tutor students virtually if students cannot see peer tutors face to face. You can use Skype, Gmail chat, or a messaging client (e.g. Meebo or Pidgin) with your peer tutor. Please e-mail your peer tutor to schedule a virtual tutoring session.

What to Bring

We recommend that you bring at least two copies of any written work (or you can bring your laptop and work on screen), your class notes and syllabus, textbooks, and most importantly, your assignment description. Please note that peer tutors will not write on documents that you will take home. Peer tutor notes do not leave CAW.

E-mailing your Peer Tutor

We recommend that you e-mail a copy of your outline or draft to your WIP peer tutor prior to your scheduled synchronous tutoring session, e.g. face-to-face, Skype, Gmail chat, or instant message.

Hours coming soon!

Hello, my name is Ronny Rayan. I am a senior at Northeastern Illinois University (NEIU) majoring in Secondary Education and Biology, in which I would like to become a middle school to high school Biology/Science teacher. I also plan on attending graduate school to further build on my knowledge of becoming a more experienced professional educator. This is my first semester tutoring Biology at the Center for Academic Writing, in which I am very excited to help my fellow peers become better writers in the biological sciences. I have just taken the WIP BIO 305 course last semester, in which I am still very fresh in thought on the course expectations, especially in terms of writing. I can relate to how stressful and demanding the class can be, however, I am here to provide feedback and tips to help my fellow peers build on their biological writing abilities, which can help them succeed in this course, as well as further down into their biology career.

Hello, my name is Mirela Jezerak. I am originally from Bosnia & Herzegovina and came to the United States about seventeen years ago. I am a junior here at Northeastern Illinois University. I am majoring in Elementary Education with a minor in TESL. I am in my second semester of my first year in the College of Education. I have a lot of experience working with children and have been working at a Montessori daycare located in Niles for the last five years. In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my daughter, playing sports, listening to music, and reading new books. I am very detail orientated and enjoy helping others out. I am very excited about having this opportunity to work with all of you so I encourage you to come visit me!

Hours coming soon!

Hello! My name is Dana Brown and I am a tutor for the PSYC202 Research Methods and Statistics WIP course. I am a junior at NEIU studying psychology and social justice studies, which are two things that I love individually, but love even more when applied to one another. This is my first semester tutoring, and I am so excited to help students become the best writers they can be. I completed the PSYC202 course last semester, so the ins and outs of APA style writing are fresh in my mind, and I look forward to helping you along every step of the writing process!

I hope to see you at the CAW very soon!

SCED 301 WIP: Methods of Teaching on the Secondary Level (Colak)

Rachael Powell

Hours coming soon!

Hi! My name is Rachael Powell. I am a senior at NEIU working to finish up my bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education and English. After earning my degree in December, I hope to find myself working as a high school English teacher in or around the Chicago area. Along with the focus in Education, I will also be graduating with an endorsement in teaching Psychology (which was unintentional—but I’m excited!), and an endorsement in teaching at the middle school level. This is my first semester working as a WIP tutor in the Center for Academic Writing, and I am so excited to work with students taking SCED 301-Methods of Teaching on the secondary level. I understand the importance of being reflective, collaborative and transformative in everything we do as future educators and I can’t wait to reflect, collaborate and transform with other future educators this semester!

Being a recent student of this course myself, I have not forgotten the stress this coursework can carry. Any questions you have about the content in the course, the diversity essay, the lesson plans or unit plans—come to the fourth floor of the Library and I will be happy to help you!
