PSYC 110: LIFE SPAN DEVELOPMENT

This course focuses on human development across the life span. We will study the physical, cognitive and psychosocial changes that occur from birth until death. You will have an opportunity to examine and evaluate current research and theories used to describe and explain human growth and change.

Text. Seifert, K.L., Hoffnung, R.J., & Hoffnung, M. (1997) Lifespan development. Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company.

Exams. Four multiple-choice/short-answer exams will be given during the semester. You may use a Cue Card while you take your exam. A Cue Card is one 3" x 5" index card on which you have written or outlined information from the textbook and classroom lectures. Practice tests are available on the course website. There are no make-up exams.

Final Exam. You may take the 175-point final exam to replace the exam points generated during the semester. The final exam is cumulative and includes questions from the four short exams. You may use one Cue Card during the final exam. The final exam is optional and will be given on the final dates identified in NEIU course schedule. The Section 01 (9:25 TR) Final is scheduled on December 17 at 8:00 - 9:50 am. The final exam for Section 02 (10:50 TR) is scheduled on December 15 at 10:00 - 11:50 am. The final exam for Section 31 (7:05 TR) is scheduled on December 17 at 8:00 - 9:50 pm.

Projects. You must complete two projects during the semester. A description of each project is provided on the course website (See "Life Span on the Internet"). The first project (30 points/5-7 pages) is due on October 6 and the second project (70 points/10-12 pages) must be turned in by December 1. Projects must be typed and are due at the beginning of class. Late papers will be accepted only if you have made prior arrangements with me.

Project 1 options: Interview (Bi-lingual, Divorce, Generational differences). Observation (Toys, Song lyrics, Hanging out). Television (Preschool, Middle childhood, Adolescents, Late adulthood).

Project 2 options: Scrapbook. Biography (book must be approved). Letter-to (Adolescent, Young Adult, Middle-Age Adult, Late Adult). Design a Program (Infant/Preschool care, K-6 after school care, Daycare for elderly)

Extra Credit . You will have two opportunities (i.e., Essay questions and Activities) to earn extra credit for this class. You may attempt both types of extra credit. Essay Questions. Following each exam, an extra credit essay question will be posted on the web. Answer the question and turn it in at the beginning of the next class session to be graded. Your response must be typed. Late questions will not be accepted. Activities. You may earn up to 10 exam points by completing one of two activities: Movie analysis or Media clipping analysis. A complete description of the extra credit activities is provided on the course website. All extra credit is due on December 10.

Research Participation. You may earn exam points by participating in research projects sponsored by the NEIU Psychology department. Projects are posted on the bulletin board across from S311. You will earn two points for every project that you complete. You may participate in no more than three projects.

Course Grade Your course grade will be based on the number of points you earn during the semester and assigned according the grade ranges listed below:

Email. All enrolled NEIU students have an email account on the NEIU computer network. You may use email to contact me. My email address is: T-Schuepfer@neiu.edu I check my email twice a day and will respond to your message within a day. If you forget the email address, there is an email link is available on the website. All you have to do is click on the email button, type in your message and click on the Send button and you have sent me a message.

Chat Room. I have set up a chat room for my students if you would like to discuss class material. Or, if you hesitate to contact me with a question, you can post a question to your fellow students. The chat room is located at: http://webboard.neiu.edu/~lifespan.

On-line Study Groups. Students may form on-line study groups to prepare for exams. Please contact me if you would like to form or join an on-line study group. The study groups will be at: http://webboard.neiu.edu/~lifespan.

Study Session with Dr. Schuepfer. I will conduct on-line study sessions before each of the four exams. Students may post questions or just view the study session as it unfolds. You do not have to post a question to be part of the study session. The time and date of each study session will be announced in class and posted on the course website.
