by Sylvia Dresser ACCT, the Association for Challenge Course Technology, is an organization focused on the challenge course industry. ACCT sets the standards for the industry (installation, inspection, ethics and operations), and has a peer review program for vendors of challenge course services. The standards are currently in their fifth edition, published in January 2002. The sixth edition, with a total revamp of the operations standards, is due out in the fall of 2003. The ACCT conference will be held January 22-25, 2004, in Charleston, South Carolina, at a beachfront resort. Workshops at the conference cover topics such as facilitation, staff training, challenge course management, and risk management. Challenge course tours are also arranged, and the Builders’ Olympics is always a highlight, as well as the receptions held in the exhibit hall. It’s a great place to make connections and check out the latest in challenge course issues. For more information on ACCT, including membership and standards purchase as well as conference information, call 847-945-0829, or visit www.acctinfo.org. AEE, the Association for Experiential Education, focuses on all aspects of experiential education, such as adventure as well as therapeutic and corporate applications of experiential education, classroom applications, service learning, and a host of other topics. The Annual AEE conference will be held in Vancouver, BC, this year, November 13-16. Workshops at AEE cover topics like wilderness therapy, body image and outdoor pursuits, publishing in the experiential education field, and environmental impacts of programs, among other topics. There are also pre and post conference sessions, and a variety of keynote speakers, as well as the annual Kurt Hahn address, given this year by Craig Dobkin. There is also a regional conference for the Heartland region of AEE, which will be held next March in Brookston, Indiana, at Camp Tecumseh. It’s a chance to get together with like minded folks in a smaller environment than the Annual AEE conference, and is always a great place to pick up information and new ideas. Information about
AEE conferences, membership and the accreditation program can be found
on the web at www.aee.org, or call 303-440-8844.
