"Wisdom of Our Elders - An Essay on Life at 78 RPM's"
by Tom Smith, Raccoon

When I was young, much centered around my 78 RPM records and my '55 Chevy, TV was young, and so was I. 33 1/3 LP's were new and 45's were popular. It was well before the time of videos and compact discs.

There is a time for movement and a time for stillness. Do you know that whale songs recorded at 33 1/3 RPM's and played back at 78 RPM's sound exactly like bird songs? Ah, the grand connectedness of all things. Circles of life.

Sometimes my life experiences seem to be unfolding at 78 RPM's, even though my internal rhythms are only 45 RPMS's. Sometimes, when I'm playing my songs at 78 RPM's the listeners are processing at 33 1/3 RPM. To slow is to know.

I've done lots of facilitating at 78 RPM's, but lately I have slowed down to 33 1/3 RPM's. I hope that gives the learner a chance to spin inner tapes of meaning. Can the 10-day, or two week, or four hour experience be facilitated at 33 1/3 instead of 78? Remember, it is their experience, not ours!

I drove my '55 Chevy for ten years. I drove it slowly, because my children rode therein. They are grown now, and sometimes they drive too fast, and travel on super-highways and super-nets. Best we all slow down and smell another rose or two. Not only is it the process that counts most, the speed of the process must be considered.
