"Report from the Heartland of AEE" by Sylvia Dresser As you may know, the Association for Experiential Education, an International Association based in Boulder, CO, had 8 geographic regions in North America. I am currently serving as Chair of the Region Council here in the Heartland, which encompasses 10 states and 3 Canadian provinces. As a council, we believe that AEE must be available to us in the areas which we live. Every year, the region hosts a regional conference (March 19-21, 1999, in Hudson, WI, just across the river from the Twin Cities), and each year there is an international conference (November 6-9, 1998, in Lake Tahoe, Nevada). However, many of our members and potential members can't always get to these conferences - and many of us who do meet people who live close to us, but meet halfway across the country! So, we have started to really encourage and support folks who want to do an informal, easy one-day get together, right in "your neck of the woods." If you would like to find out who might be doing one in your area, or better yet, if you're willing to take the initiative and start one yourself, please contact Teresa Jex at 219-531-5747, or at <jex@niia.net>. We also have the honor of hosting the first Women's Professional Group conference, which will be held January29-31, 1999, at Camp Algonquin, in Algonquin, IL. The theme of the conference is (Images: a conference for women in Experiential Education.) Workshops are being planned now; some topics are developing a sense of competence, loss and grief, taking care of self, and fear in the wilderness. The theme of the 1999 Heartland conference is Rendezvous at the River - we have an incredibly enthusiastic group working on taking us back to the days of the voyageurs, and presenting a fantastic slate of workshops besides! The registration brochure for this conference will be available in January, it will be sent automatically to all AEE members in the Heartland region. AEE is a vibrant and growing organization. With a fast-developing accreditation program, membership pro-deals, great publications like The Journal of Experiential Education, it's a great place to be. As if this wasn't enough, so many members speak of "coming home" when they attend their first AEE function - so if you're not a member, or if you've never been to an AEE function, maybe NOW's the time!
