Secondary Education Program

PROGRAM OVERVIEW:

The Secondary Education sequence leads to entitlement in eight secondary certification programs in the following subject areas:
 
 
Art
History
Biology
Mathematics
English
Music K-12
French
Physical Education
Health
Spanish

Students seeking secondary teacher certification declare an academic major and an "area of study" in secondary education.

ACADEMIC MAJOR REQUIREMENTS:

    39 credit hours of university general education course work
    28 credit hours of professional education coursework
    16 credit hours of additional requirements for state certification
     additional course work to equal a minimum of 120 semester credit hours
 
 

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS FOR STATE CERTIFICATION IN SECONDARY EDUCATION:
English 101 Writing I 3 credit hours
English 102 Writing II 3 credit hours
Spch-Comm 202 OR 101 Voice and Diction or Foundation of Communications 3 credit hours
Mathematics elective meeting University Math Competency Requirement 4 credit hours
HLED 107 or HLED 312 3 credit hours
TOTAL 16 CREDIT HOURS

 

PROFESSIONAL SEQUENCE IN SECONDARY EDUCATION:

EDFN 305 Philosophical and Historical Foundations of Public Education
(Prerequisite: Junior standing)
3 credit hours
EDFN 306 Education and Individual Differences
(Includes 20 clock hours of clinical experiences; Prerequisite: Junior standing)
3 credit hours
Must be admitted to College of Education
EDFN 307 Psychology of Instruction and Learning
(Includes 20 clock hours of clinical experience; Prerequisite: EDFN 306)
3 credit hours
SCED 301* Methods of Teaching on the Secondary Level (Apply in advance to the Office of Student Teaching and Clinical Experiences; Requires 20 clock hours of clinical experience.  Prerequisite:  EDFN 306, and completion of a minimum of 21 semester credit hours in the major) 3 credit hours
READ 301 Teaching Reading in Junior and Senior High School 
(Prerequisite:  Junior standing)
3 credit hours
SCED 303** Methods of Teaching in the Secondary School (Prerequisite: SCED 301) 3 credit hours
SCED 304** Clinical Experiences in the Secondary School (Apply one year in advance to the Office of Clinical Experiences and Student Teaching; includes 80-clock hour minimum of clinical experience; taken concurrently with SCED 303) 1 credit hours
SCED 305 Secondary Student Teaching and Seminar (Must complete and  attend orientation meeting one year in advance) 9 credit hours
TOTAL 28 CREDIT HOURS
*Foreign Language and Music majors with complete ELED 311 instead of SCED 301 for their K-12 certification requirements.
**Foreign Language majors must complete three credit hours of foreign language clinical experience (FL 300) along with SCED 303.  Music majors must complete MUS 393L as part of their clinical experience.  Physical Education majors enroll in the "Fall Block."

STATE CERTIFICATION EXAMINATIONS:

Students seeking teacher certification are required by the state of Illinois to pass the Basic Skills and Subject Matter Knowledge tests.  Study guides and applications are available at http://www.isbe.net/  The Basic Skills test is required prior to declaring secondary education as an area of study, and is also required for College of Education admission.   The subject matter test must be passed prior to authorization for student teaching.  A third test, the Assessment of Professional Teaching, (APT) must be passed prior to receiving state certification.
