The Secondary Education sequence leads to entitlement in eight
secondary certification programs in the following subject areas:

Students seeking secondary teacher certification declare an academic
major and an "area of study" in secondary education.

*Foreign Language and Music majors with complete ELED 311 instead of
SCED 301 for their K-12 certification requirements.
**Foreign Language majors must complete three credit hours of foreign
language clinical experience (FL 300) along with SCED 303. Music
majors must complete MUS 393L as part of their clinical experience.
Physical Education majors enroll in the "Fall Block."
STATE CERTIFICATION EXAMINATIONS:
Students seeking teacher certification are required by the state
of Illinois to pass the Basic Skills and Subject Matter Knowledge tests.
Study guides and applications are available at http://www.isbe.net/
The Basic Skills test is required prior to declaring secondary education
as an area of study, and is also required for College of Education admission.
The subject matter test must be passed prior to authorization for student
teaching. A third test, the Assessment of Professional Teaching,
(APT) must be passed prior to receiving state certification.

INFORMATION
About Course Work:
-
Only courses included on the Limited List of Courses during the term
of enrollment (published in the Schedule of Classes) are applicable towards
the General Education requirements.

Continuing students who have successfully completed their General Education
program prior to Fall 1993 will have satisfied the General Education Program
requirements for graduation
-
Continuing students who have not completed their General Education program
prior to Fall 1993 will follow the revised General Education program requirements.
-
Continuing students who have successfully passed General Education Courses
prior to Fall 1993 can follow the revised General Education program requirements.
-
Effective as of the Fall 1993 semester, newly admitted and readmitted
undergraduates will be required to meet the revised General Education program
requirements.
-
The Pass/Fail option may not be used to meet any General Education
requirements.
-
A student may use no more than six (6) hours of "D" to meet the distribution
area requirements.
-
By the tenth week of the Fall and Spring semesters, faculty teaching
General Education courses must notify any students with less than a "C"
average of his/her grade in the course.
-
All General Education requirements must be completed during the first
75 credit hours of course work.
-
Majors in the Fine Arts, Humanities, Social/Behavioral Sciences, and
Natural Sciences may waive up to six credit hours of General Education
requirements in the corresponding distribution area.
-
At the discretion of the major department, majors in the Natural Sciences
may waive up to an additional six credit hours of General Education in
the Natural Science distribution area.
-
A student may use no more than two courses from any one area of study
(including courses transferred to Northeastern) to meet the distribution
requirements in Humanities, Natural Sciences, and Social/Behavioral Sciences.
No more than one course from any area of study (including transferred courses)
may be used to meet the Fine Arts distribution requirements.

All university general education requirements must be completed within
75 hours. The pass/fail option may not be used for general education
requirements.

Students may use no more than six hours of "D" to meet the distribution
area requirements in general education.

Students who require developmental courses in reading or mathematics
must take the indicated courses during their first 30 hours in residence.
Students who have not completed their development courses may not begin
their major course work.
-
A GPA of 2.75 in the professional sequence is required in order to student
teach. Professional courses may not be taken more than twice to achieve
an acceptable grade.
-
Student teaching is a full-day, five days a week schedule for 16 weeks.
All incompletes in a major or in the professional sequence must be changed
to a grade prior to student teaching.
