Question: How do I become a major? Answer: You must declare your major. Go to the page on declaring the major. Question: How do I become a minor? Answer: You must declare your major. Go to the page on declaring the minor. Question: Can I complete this program in two years? Answer: If you have completed all of the Liberal Arts required courses, you will be able to enter the Social Work foundation courses and potentially finish those courses in two years. Go to the page on Curriculum to find out more. Question: Can I go part-time? Answer: Yes you can complete the Social Work courses on a part-time basis. However, there are some required courses that must be taken concurrently and sequentially. Go the page on Curriculum to find out more. Question: When do I see my advisor? Answer: You will be assigned a Social Work faculty advisor when you declare your major with us. Please make contact with your advisor prior on-line registration. Question: Can I change my advisor? Answer: Yes you may change your advisor based upon programmatic issues such as conflict in schedules. Please contact the Social Work secretary at 773-442-4760 Question: What if I miss the first day of classes? Will I still be in the course? Answer: If you miss the first day's) of classes please contact the instructor by phone or e-mail so that you will not be dropped from the class list. Go to the page on Faculty. Question: How do I get authorized into a class? Answer: If you did not pre-register for the class you must contact the Social Work Secretary by phone or e-mail for her to authorize you into the class. Question: What if I miss the deadline for change of registration? Answer: First you get a letter from the instructor of the course stating that it is acceptable for you to be in the class. You take this letter to the Dean of the College of Arts and Science. Speak to the secretary about who to give the letter to. As of 1/2001 this person is Mary Tarshis. Question: Why can't I enroll in some of the Social Work courses, especially some of the elective courses because I am a minor? Answer: Because of state licensing for social workers the Council of Social Work Education requires that you must be a major in Social Work to enroll in more advanced content courses. There are no exceptions to this policy. Question: Can I do my field placement internship at my place of social work employment? Answer: Maybe. The Field Coordinator will evaluation your situation. If you can arrange for new experiences at your place of employment the Field Coordinator might approve of it as a field placement experience. Look at the Field Manual. Questions: How many hours do I have to work for the field placement? Answer: The field placement is for two term (September-May) for a total of 516 hours. That works out to be about 16 hours per week. Question: Can I use my volunteer experience or work experience for the field placement internship? Answer: No. The field experience has to be approved by the Field Coordinator and must be held to the standard set forth by our accreditation body The Council of Social Work Education. Question: Can I be in the BOG program and the Social Work Program at the same time? Answer: Yes. You are able to be in the BOG and graduate with a Bachelors of Social Work Degree. You must, as with all other students, take all of the required courses in social work.
