Getting involved in co-curricular activities outside the classroom will improve your opportunities for success both in and out of the classroom and will enhance your overall NEIU experience. The Co-Curricular Menu lists activities and programs including student clubs, student leadership opportunities, cultural events, and support services. The menu is organized into categories/sections that link the activities to the overall goals of the First Year Program.

Visit the Angelina Pedroso Center for Diversity and Intercultural Affairs. The Pedroso Center (located in Building B, room 159) is your home away from home where you will find all kinds of people coming together as a community to celebrate individual differences and promote dialog on topics of diversity and social justice. In this comfortable space, you can catch up with old friends, make new friends, or just study or relax. Attend a meeting of an academically related organization tied with a major you are interested in to learn more about professional and career opportunities related to that major. Check with the Student Activities office for organizations and their meeting times. A list of student organizations and their contact information can be found at Stop by the Information Center in Village Square to sign out rooms SU 218 and 219 for small group study sessions or check out board games to play with friends between classes. Attend an event in the Student Union. Enjoy live Music in the Eagles Nest Food Court or join the Poetry Club and share your words of wisdom or listen to those of other students. Get involved in saving the environment by participating in Green Week. Write a poem or some prose, or send a photograph of your artwork to the Seeds literary journal, which provides a medium for students and members of the university community to showcase their talents in the visual and literary arts. Write an article for Que Onde Sola magazine, providing the NEIU community with relevant and engaging information on student and community issues with a focus on the Puerto Rican community and other Latina/o groups. Email them at queondeesola@gmail.com. Volunteer to DJ at WZRD, NEIU's student-run radio station. Any student can join–you do not have to be a broadcasting or journalism major. Student DJs are encouraged to play any form of non-mainstream music they like. Contact the Station Manager, Cathleen Schandelmeier Bartels, at schandelmeier@gmail.com. Write an article, edit, take some photographs, or do layout for the Independent, the student-run newspaper. The Learning Support Center is available to assist students in a variety of ways.Tutoring and academic support is available in the following: writing, math, reading, general education courses, general learning strategies, and learning group support. Attend a group review session for one of your general education courses prior to your mid-term and/or final exams. The schedules of these review sessions will be announced in your general education classes and posted on class bulletin boards. Schedule an appointment with a tutor in the Learning Support Center (ext. 4568) to get help in a class. Attend a Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Workshop to learn techniques to reduce stress and increase relaxation and focus. Schedule an appointment with a personal trainer in Campus Recreation to develop a workout routine to help you manage stress and stay in shape. Do you know what type of shape you’re in? Make an appointment online with Health Services to find out your cholesterol levels, get tested for high blood pressure, etc. Visit the Student Health Services web site at www.neiu.edu/healthservices and learn about the many services and programs available that can help you in taking care of yourself. Attend a Feel Better Fast Workshop to learn how to support your personal and academic functioning through stress management and self-care skills. Contact the Counseling Office for dates, times, and location (D 024, ext. 4650). Sign up for a Group Exercise Class sponsored by Campus Recreation to help manage your stress. Attend one of the Fitness Center Orientation Dates Mondays through Saturdays throughout the semester to learn how to use the equipment available in the Fitness Center. Check the Campus Recreation website www.neiu.edu/campusrecreation for specific dates and times. The Counseling Office website is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If you are feeling a need to talk with a counselor you can reach one through the website or make an appointment. You can have an impact on Board of Trustees, administration and faculty decisions made at Northeastern. The Student Government Association (SGA) is composed of 30 elected students. It appoints students to university-wide committees which make decisions in areas such as Grade Appeals, Campus Planning, Student Judicial Hearings, Financial Aid and Parking Appeals. The Student Government Association gives you the opportunity to interact with your peers while you represent the student body in making decisions that affect the quality of student life at NEIU. Send a letter to the editor of the student newspaper, The Independent, in which you provide some critical analysis on a recent article or on current events. Participate in the Advancing Leadership Recognition Program, a progressive leadership program offered by the Leaders Emerging and Developing (LEAD) program through the Student Activities Office. It is custom designed to equip you with proven leadership skills you will need to succeed personally and professionally. By completing a combination of workshops, engagement activities, community service opportunities, and personal reflections, you will work your way through a three-tier program based on the Social Change Model of Leadership Development. Each year, the Angelina Pedroso Center for Diversity and Intercultural Affairs coordinates a series of Annual Heritage Conferences that celebrate the collective cultural experience and heritage of the NEIU community. Get some friends together and sign up for some Intramural Sports leagues, including Basketball, Soccer, Floor Hockey, Mini-Golf, Table Tennis, Tennis, and Two-Person Golf Scramble. The Presidential Lecture Series brings distinguished authors and artists to speak at NEIU. Upcoming speakers include Musicologist Alan Walker on March 29, 2012, at 7:00 pm in the NEIU Auditorium; and Candace Gingrich on April 21, at 7:30 pm in the Auditorium. The Accessibility Center provides academic and technical assistance to students and works closely with faculty to facilitate student success. Services include the following: new student orientations, proctored examinations, adaptive technology access, self-advocacy training, auxiliary aid exploration, and accommodation strategies.
