EARLY CHILDHOOD, SPECIAL EDUCATION

Program Information

The Early Childhood Special Education program offers two options:


Early Childhood, Special Education

(36 total credit hours)

Admission to the NEIU Graduate College (forms are available at the Graduate College on the main campus and online, http://www.neiu.edu/~gradcoll)

Bachelor’s degree

Illinois State Certification (One of the following: Type 04 or Type 10  with LBS I endorsement)

Minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale

Two professional letters of recommendation


Illinois State Approval in Early Childhood, Special Education

(15 total credit hours)

Admission to the University (forms are available at the Graduate College on the main campus and online at, www.neiu.edu/~gradcoll/forms/index.html)

Bachelor’s degree

Illinois State Certification (One of the following: Type 04 or Type 10  with LBS I endorsement)

Minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale

Coursework Requirements for M.A. in Early Childhood, Special Education (36 total credit hours)

ECED 408  Language Acquisition and Intervention Strategies for Teachers of Young Children (3)


ECED 403 Early Childhood Assessment (3)

ECED 410 Curriculum Development in Early Childhood Education (3)

SPED 411A Practicum in Early Childhood Education (3)

SPED 481 Principles of Diagnosis and Teaching the Child with Special Needs Aged 3 to 6 Years (3)

SPED 482 Assessment and Intervention with Infants and Toddlers Who are At-Risk or Handicapped (3)

SPED 483 Working with Parents of Young Children with Special Needs (3)

SPED 488 Practicum in Early Childhood Special Education: Teaching Young Children with Special Needs (3)

SPED 515 Research Seminar in Early Childhood Special Education (3)


Elective courses (9 credit hours) will be discussed between graduate students and graduate advisor.


Comprehensive Examination

All graduate students must successfully complete a comprehensive examination, which is offered following completion of 481, 482, 483, and practicum 488 and must be taken 3 months prior to completion of the program.
