Martha Thompson earned her Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Iowa and taught at Northeastern for 30 years, retiring from full-time teaching in 2006.  She is currently the Director of IMPACT Chicago and also teaches women's self-defense through IMPACT.  She teaches WSP 150 Women's Self-Defense at Northeastern once or twice a year. Still active in sociology, her research and writing focus on integrating a social justice/social change perspective into teaching.  She is  alsoco-authoring a gender studies textbook with Michael Armato and Wamucii Njogu. She is a member of the American Sociological Association, Sociologists for Women in Society, the Midwest Sociological Society, and Midwest Sociologists for Women in Society.
