Albany Park--Welcoming the World

Monday, March 28th: 7:05 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.
Speaker: Ron Grossman, Speaker & Community Respondents

As a gateway to the world, Albany Park exemplifies the global village. For more than a century, it has been home to one of the most culturally diverse populations in Chicago, the Midwest, and the United States. According to Grossman, "Chicago's fortunes have always depended upon establishing and maintaining connections with lands and peoples across the seas.... Albany Park remains what it was: a place a place where immigrants and their offspring occupy a mental space about midway between their older and newer homelands....[I]t is part of the answer to the fundamental question: Is Chicago a global city?" (2004, p.95).

Ron Grossman is a staff writer for the Chicago Tribune, covering Chicago’s ethnic neighborhoods. Former professor of history, Grossman’s 1982 map of ethnic groups in Chicago--widely adopted by universities and government agencies—remains the definitive survey of the city’s neighborhoods. His publications include, Guide to Chicago Neighborhoods, and "Global City, Global People" in Global Chicago (2004).
