Does NEIU Support WiFi?

Wireless Access Points @ NEIU

Secure Wireless (WPA2) requires the SecureW2 EAP Suite located in the Downloads section.

It is recommended that you have Windows XP SP3 installed for maximum security and compatibility. If you are using Windows XP SP2, you must install the "Wireless Client Update" which adds WPA2 functionality.

How Long Can I Keep My E-Mail Account After I Graduate ?

Your account will last eighteen months before it is deactivated. If you plan to graduate and are concerned about the deletion of your files, you may wish to save important files to a personal storage device.

When I submit an electronic payment through NEIUport, is it encrypted?

Yes, via SSL. Please visit the following link for information regarding ePayment: www.neiu.edu/e_payment/epayment.html.

Does NEIU support PHP?

Yes. Please contact the Computer Science Department to see which PHP classes are being offered this semester.

I received an e-mail that appears to be from the NEIU Message Center asking to verify my NEIU E-mail account. Is this legitimate?

No, this is a phishing scam. NEIU will never send you an e-mail asking for your login information. Do not reply to this message. If possible, forward the e-mail and complete header information to scs@neiu.edu.

Can I write a PDF or convert Word files to PDFs on a lab computer?

On a MAC, MS Word files can be converted to PDF format when saving the document.

On a Windows machine, there is a virtual print driver called doPDF that you can convert MS Word files to PDF.

However, once the document has been converted to PDF, it can no longer be edited on lab computers.

How Do I ...

How do I obtain my NetID for NEIUport?

How do I access e-mail using the NEIU POP server?

When using an e-mail program such as Outlook, Thunderbird, or Apple Mail, you must enter "Incoming" and "Outgoing" addresses for the e-mail server to which you are connecting. POP3 access to NEIU E-Mail may be retired in the near future and be replaced by IMAP.

NEIU uses the following servers:

for Nmail POP3 and IMAP setting please see Google

pop3.neiu.edu (POP3 server used for incoming mail)
smtp.neiu.edu (SMTP server used for outgoin mail)

NOTE: If you have an Internet Service Provider (i.e., Comcast, AT&T, etc.) , you must obtain the correct SMTP (outgoing) server settings from your ISP. NEIU does not allow relaying of e-mail through another ISP's Internet connection. You may have to set your SMTP (outgoing) server to your ISP's outgoing server for e-mail to transfer.

How do I safely eject my USB drive?

Windows XP: Using the left mouse button, left-click once on the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon in the bottom right corner of your screen (also known as the System Tray) and you will see a message to "Safely Remove <the name of your USB device>". Click the device with the left mouse button and it will stop the USB device and allow you to remove your USB drive safely. Please do not right-click or double-click the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon as it will show an Administrative restriction error message.

Macintosh OS X: Drag the USB drive icon from the desktop to the Trash Can. Please note that the Trash Can icon will change into the Eject symbol. Once the USB drive no longer shows up on the desktop, you may unplug the USB drive from the computer.

What if I try to check my NEIU Webmail from home using AOL but I keep getting a "Session Timed Out" message. What's wrong?

This problem has been replicated and has to do with AOL's proprietary web browser. It does not matter what version of AOL you are using or if it is Windows or Macintosh. AOL's embedded browser does not operate well with all Internet standards and we recommend you use a more fully compliant Internet browser such as Mozilla, Firefox, or Opera. Internet Explorer 6 (or better) works equally well. If you are not using AOL but are getting the "session timed out" error, we recommend you run the "Windows Update" feature (on Windows) or the "Software Update" feature (on Macintosh) to be sure you have all the Critical Updates, patches, and browser updates available for your operating system.

What if on my home computer I click "Compose" while in WebMail but a blank / white screen pops up or nothing happens?

Whether you're using a Mac or a Windows PC, you'll need to be sure your Java VM (Virtual Machine) software is up to date. Webmail is Java-based and requires Java from Sun Microsystems. As of February 2009, JRE 6.0 Update 12 is the latest version of the Java technology. Java is a trademark of Sun Microsystems.

For Macintosh: Run Software Update. Software Update will automatically detect if a Java update is available and prompt you to install it.

For Windows: Windows users should visit the Sun web site at Sun Microsystems - Java and download the J2SE 6.0 JRE Update 12 (Java 2 Runtime Environment).

Modern web browsers such as Mozilla, Firefox, SeaMonkey, Safari, and Internet Explorer 6.0 SP2 (or newer) have built in pop-up blocking features that may be blocking the WebMail composition window from appearing. If you are having this problem, it's a good idea to configure the pop-up blocking feature to allow pop-ups from neiu.edu to appear.

What if my webpage is not viewable?

Detailed instructions are available here

I try to upload a file to Blackboard and I get an error message that says "Please Enter a Valid File Name"

This can happen because the file name has spaces or non-standard characters such as hyphens or underscores or has too many characters in it. For example, if you file is named "Some Class Project.doc" or "Some_Class_Project.doc", there is a possibility that Blackboard will fail to upload this file. Some recommended solutions are to rename it to something like "clssprj.doc" or whatever the professor requires.

If you try these steps and still have issues, you may want to save the document as a different version (Office 2003 instead of Office 2010) and use a different web browser than the one you are currently using to access Blackboard.
