About the Office of Scholarships and Retention

Students are often faced with the dilemma of how they will pay for their education. For many the financing of a university education becomes a barrier to learning. Keeping this in mind, the mission of the Office of Scholarships & Retention (OSR) is to lead in the promotion and awarding of university scholarship funds to deserving students. Therefore, the goal is to assist in lessening the economic burden that many students seek to overcome. Along with the administration of scholarships, OSR through partnerships with various campus units, also is involved in implementing activities, such as special workshops and outreach efforts, which encourage the persistence and success of our students

How are scholarships awarded?

  • Students may begin to submit their completed applications by March 15th to OSR. It is recommended that students wishing to be considered for fall scholarships, submit their applications no later than June 15th.
  • Students may indicate the scholarship that they wish to be considered for, however, in many cases, the Director of OSR matches the applicants' qualifications with the appropriate scholarships.
  • Students are sent letters acknowledging that the office has received their applications.
  • During the late spring and summer, the University Scholarship Committee (USC) reviews and selects recipients for each of the scholarships.
  • Students who are selected to receive scholarships are sent letters. Each receipient is asked to sign an acceptance along with a thank you letter to the donor of the scholarship, which is then forwarded to OSR. Typically the scholarship awards are posted directly to the receipient's student aid account. Those students who are not selected to receive scholarships are sent a letter as well informing them of the status of their applications.

Other types of aid and departmental scholarships

  • Students wishing to be considered for state and federal funding should complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which is available on-line beginning January 1 of each year at, www.fafsa.ed.gov. It is necessary to complete a FAFSA as early as possible, by March 1 is suggested. Also, since in many instances students' financial need is taken into consideration regarding the awarding of scholarships, it is important to complete the FAFSA.
