DISPLAY CASES
SCIENCE BUILDING ADVISORY GROUP POSTION
3/11/03

Interesting displays representing a variety of disciplines can usefully promote programs and can enhance the professional appearance of the entire
building.  With few exceptions the cases are not "owned" by any particular department, and therefore responsibility for creating and maintaining
displays may be rotated among the various departments in the building.

It's worth noting that disciplines are not equally "visual" and may not lend themselves easily to display cases.  Some might prefer wall-mounted
cases for posters or printed materials rather than the standing cases. Also, assembling a nice display can take significant effort, and regular
maintenance is important to keep them looking fresh.

The committee supports the following principles relating to display cases:

  1. The cases should represent a  wide a variety of disciplines in the building, as long as they are attractive, well maintained and periodically updated.
  2. If cases are near a particular department's office or room cluster that department should have priority.
  3. If a department has a nice display or idea for a display, it should request a particular case from the department currently using it.  Interdepartmental equity, "age" of the occupying display, and location should all be considered when identifying such a case.
  4. Switching, updating, and even moving displays from one case to another should be encouraged.
  5. Wall mounted cases may be purchased and mounted with the approval of facilities management. There are few if any new places for another floor case.
The SBAG encourages departments to develop great displays and work through department chairs and coordinators to find good places for them.  If a
conflict arises that can't be resolved interdepartmentally, SBAG will be willing to attempt a negotiation.
